When is a parakeet sexually mature?

Parakeets are sexually mature around 6 months of age, but at that point the females are about as prepared to raise young as a thirteen-year-old human girl is of raising a child. The females need to be at least 12 months old to safely rear young because at this age they are finished growing and are better equipped to handle the stresses of raising chicks. Males, however, can be between the ages of 6-8 months and breed without stunting growth, although fertility may not be as good as with a fully grown male.

How do budgies behave when they are ready to breed?

Budgies which are getting close to laying an egg become more lively, excitable and playful. If they have a nesting box, they will spend a lot more time in the box, preparing it for nesting, and possibly being very protective of that area. If there is a male, he may start feeding the female.

Budgies look the same when they are laying eggs as when they aren't. In other words, birds don't "hold" their eggs inside their bodies and show a big belly to indicate that eggs are on the way. The egg shell is the last thing that develops right before the egg is laid, therefore, a hen doesn't "show" in the sense that human women "show" when they are pregnant.

Swelling in the abdominal area could also mean the parrot is egg-bound, though this tends to present more as swelling near the bird's tail, near the cloacae. She will be distressed and show signs of constipation, be reluctant to move and "waddle" like a penguin. If your bird shows signs of being egg-bound, she must be taken to the vet as soon as possible, as this can be a life-threatening condition.

How does a lutino ring-necked parakeet make its nest?

Lutino (not "Latino," that is a human ethnic group) ring-necked parakeets are not a species. Ring-necked parakeet can refer to any of several species in the genus Psittacula. A lutino is a bird that has a genetic mutation that has removed all of the bird's black pigment. They are yellow or white in places where the normal bird is green or blue. They will build their nests the same way as a normal colored bird. It's not possible to answer the question unless the exact species is known.

What caused the death of Alex the Parrot?

Alex (1976 - September 6, 2007) was an African Grey Parrot and the subject of a thirty-year (1977-2007) experiment by animal psychologist Irene Pepperberg, initially at the University of Arizona and later at Harvard and Brandeis University. Pepperberg bought Alex in a regular pet shop when he was about one year old. The name Alex is actually an acronym for Avian Learning EXperimentOn October 4, 2007 The Alex Foundation posted the following Pathology results: Alex died quickly. He had a sudden, unexpected catastrophic event associated with arterosclerosis ("hardening of the arteries"). It was either a fatal arrhythmia, heart attack or stroke, which caused him to die suddenly with no suffering. There was no way to predict his demise. All of his tests, including his cholesterol level and asper levels, came back normal earlier that week. His death could not be connected to his current diet or his age; our veterinarian said that she has seen similar events in young (<10 year old) birds on healthy diets. Most likely, genetics or the same kind of low-level (impossible to detect in birds as yet) inflammatory disease that is related to heart disease in humans was responsible.
