If he felt the slightest bit threatened, he went into "defense mode" (the brutal prison system he was subjected to was the reason for this). So, the only way to get Clyde was to kill him. He was the target, not Bonnie. But, the posse knew that the only way to kill Clyde was also to kill Bonnie. They had one chance and they took it. --- That's the reason Bonnie died, and no other. She was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
