How long are Boston terriers tails?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

When the dogs are born their tail is fairly long. Normal leagnth. But breeders usually dock (Cut) their tail when they are puppies.

Well most botons are born with a screw tails in skin, to register them for the Kennel but some breeds do cut the tail off because if it is too deep in the skin, cutting in the skin then the vet tell the breeder to have it cute, that is why some are short, also some breeder cut them because they want them to have short tails like natural bostons that the Kennel club require but if it looks cut and don't have a screw tail then they consider that it is a mix breed and not full blooded, just like the nose you can buy a Boston with a pink dot on it nose but it should turn black by 1yr then if not the kennel consider it to be a mixed breed. But breeders don;t tell you that.

What is the average running speed of a Boston terrier?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

There is a wide range of Boston Terrier speed depending on their breeding. A very "well-bred" Boston that is highly brachycephalic, or short-nosed, with a stocky body-type can be fairly quick, yet tire equally quickly. However, there are many Boston Terriers out there that have lengthier bodies and less pushed-in noses. These dogs can be very, very fast and can even join owners on runs of several miles depending on the climate.

History on the Boston Terrier.

Bred down in size from pit-fighting dogs of the bull and terrier types, the Boston Terrier originally weighed up to 44 pounds (20 kg.) (Olde Boston Bulldogge). It is difficult to believe that these stylish, little dogs were once tough pit-fighters. In fact, their weight classifications were once divided as lightweight, middle and heavyweight. Originating in the city of Boston, Massachusetts, the Boston Terrier is one of the few breeds that was developed in the USA. The original Boston Terriers were a cross between the English Bulldog and now extinct English White Terrier. Around 1865, the coachmen employed by the wealthy people of Boston began to interbreed some of the dogs owned by their employers. One of these crosses, between an English White Terrier and an English Bulldog resulted in a dog named Hooper's Judge. Judge weighed over 30 pounds (13.5 kg.). He was bred down in size with a smaller female and one of those male pups was bred to yet a smaller female. Their offspring interbred with one or more French Bulldogs, providing the foundation for the Boston Terrier. By 1889 the breed had become sufficiently popular in Boston that fanciers formed the American Bull Terrier Club, but this proposed name was not well liked by Bull Terrier lovers. Nor did they like the breeds nickname, "roundheads". Shortly after, the breed was named the Boston Terrier after its birthplace. The breed was recognized by the AKC in 1893. It was first shown in Boston in 1870. In the early years the color and markings were not very important but by the 1900's the breeds distinctive markings and color were written into the standard. Terrier only in name, the Boston Terrier has mellowed from the pit fighting dogs of the past.

What are the proper nutritional requirements for a Boston Terrier?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Make sure you are feeding them High Protein food. You want to stay away from food with any by-products, like chicken or beef or any other meat. Poultry is not good either. Don't overfeed your Boston either. I own a kennel in Ohio and I see alot of overweight Bostons'. I feed my Boston 1 c. a day. That is enough for him but he is also small than other Boston's so if yours is bigger feed 1 1/2 c. or 1 1/3 c. I also give mine plenty of rawhides and chewies because it keeps him busy. If you are not looking to breed, then you need to have your dog altered. Your dog will live longer and it will listen better and behave better. Anyways

When should a Boston Terrier's tail be docked?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Yes, Boston Terriers can have their tails docked. However, Boston Terriers with docked tails are disapproved or even disqualified by some reputable kennel clubs such as the American Kennel Club (AKC).

Docking of tails on dogs is also banned in some countires, including the United Kingdom. Some people believe that docking is cruel, as this process is done when the puppy is only a few days old and causes great pain. Docking is also unnecessary, and should not be done unless if you want to enter the dog into a dog show in the future.

Are Boston Terriers smart?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Yes they are WONDERFUL pets. I have one of my own. When they are puppies they are spazmotic but when they turn atleast 2 they learn how to act. They are always ready to play! When they are puppies They LOVE to chew on fire wood, shoes, and fingers. When they chew on fingers (only as a puppy) that is normal for all dogs. They chew fingers because they want to chew something. When you first have your Boston terrier, You must keep them in a crate while they sleep.

Is it normal for a Boston terrier to have one puppy?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The number of pups will vary regardless -- but PLEASE do NOT cross-breed these dogs! Breeding is a serious venture and purebred lines should be respected for the best interest of the dogs and the breed. Poor breeding results in weaker dogs with more medical problems, and mutt pups are denied official recognition by many organizations and venues. In short, it isn't fair to the dogs in question, nor their respective bloodlines.
