Brave New World

"Brave New World" is a dystopian novel by Aldous Huxley that explores a future society where citizens are controlled through genetic engineering, conditioning, and the use of a drug called soma. The story follows the protagonist, Bernard Marx, as he questions the rigid social structure and values of his world.

Brave New World is a book written by Aldous Huxley. The World State is run by 10 World Controllers that watch a segment of the world. Babies are born in hatcheries and are conditioned for the good of social stability. There is a caste system from Alpha being the highest to Beta then Gamma then Epsilon. They each wear a different color clothing and each play a different role in society. They are given Soma, a hallucinogen, and worship Ford. It is a very good book and i suggest you read it!

Well, they are both societies where one group is favored over another, and other groups are ostracized or looked down on. In Huxley's world, children are taught to be happy with their lower status from birth, including modification to the brain so they don't desire to be other than what they are. They never aspire to greater things. Most of the horrible things happen to children as they are being formed.

Hitler's Germany was more about genocide, and getting rid of the "inferior" people, rather than classifying them or lobotomizing them to make them happy or recognizing that everyone has a place in society. Both groups think that one group of people should make the decisions for everyone, and neither of them believe in democracy, where everyone has a voice.

However, the biggest difference is that Huxley's world was fictional. The horrors were just written, and never carried out. Hitler tried his awful experiment in real life, and murdered millions of real people... it wasn't just a fictional thought experiment to illustrate a point.

Some of the positive aspects of living in Brave New World include the availability of instant gratification and pleasure through drugs like soma, a lack of personal suffering or pain, and a society built on stability and conformity. Additionally, there is a lack of war or conflict in this world.

John the Savage is the character we are most likely to identify with. Huxley uses his point of view to ask us if we would behave similarly if we were in his position. Also, Huxley wanted this book to be about a man fighting hopelessly against society an insider could not realize that there is anything wrong with the society in brave New World so there would be no conflict, no plot.

WW I was characterized by trench warfare and poison gas, as well as huge battles with enormous casualties. WW II saw the introduction of tanks, fighter planes, bombers, and the V2 rocket, used by Germany to attack England. It was, therefore, a more technologically advanced war, culminating in the greatest technological advance of all, the atomic bomb, used by the US against Imperial Japan. Although many millions of people died in both of these wars, the deliberate slaughter of civilian populations was a particular feature of WW II. And WWII had a much larger number of deaths - over 60 million. The Holocaust remains, in the estimation of historians, the single most terrible crime in the history of the human race. But both wars were quite terrible.

Both books are based on discrimination. Farewell to Manzanar is about a Japanese American girl that is forced to leave their lives behind and move into an internment camp during the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. In Night, the main character and writer Elie a Jewish boy and his family is taken by the Nazis into a numerous concentration camps.

He was not religious. He was an atheist. Two quotes should explain his position:

It did not end the depression. We did have a lot of people go to work that had been unemployed, but that came from the government spending money on things for war. The funds that the government spent came from taxes paid by citizens. At the end of the war, we were really still in a depression, but we had built up manufacturing capability (to make the tools of war). So when the huge amounts of people all over the world needed to buy goods to rebuild after the war, the US was in a good position to sell them those items - that did solve the depression.

He is disappointed with the world state and thinks he is filthy from being at such a grotesque place. He whips himself in order to cleanse himself.

New Answer (11 May, 2012) - He tortures himself because he feels that is the only way to show himself as being human, to feel pain, to be an individual, to bleed and not take soma. If I remember right, he also does it when he gets aroused from thinking of Lenina, so it is also to say no to the temptation, the temptation that all the Alpha-Plus' do. John becomes angry at the children in the hospital after his mother, Linda, dies. He feels grief and is depressed, but the children have been conditioned to be apathetic. The only thing they know about dying is that people must serve the World State even after death through phosphorus recovery. John is angry that they have no emotion, and they can't understand his pain. They only want to be given soma, so he throws the soma out the window.

John was repulsed by Lenina's advances. He believed in love, like he read about in Shakespeare's plays, but Lenina only wanted the physical aspects (namely sex). This caused John to feel the need to purify himself from civilization, which ultimately drove him to run away, whip himself, and commit suicide.

In Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, the religion of the "Savage Reservation" is a mixture of Catholicism and indigenous religion, as opposed to the "Fordism" followed by the "civilized world."

The main character at the beginning of the novel was Bernard Marx, but later on, when the author finds a new, more relateable character in John the savage, we are switched over to him. We follow John the savage to the end of the novel, and it ends with him.

So i suppose John is the main character, but at the beginning he had yet to be discovered.
