Calamity Jane got her name by saving a leader while heading back to the Post. It all started when Capt Egan was shot while riding his horse. Calamity (Martha) saw him falling and rode over and caught him just in time. As he recovered he laughingly said"I name you Calamity Jane, heroine of the plains." She said she lived up to that name ever since!
