The most significant physical feature that forms Canada's boundary is the sea. Canada has the longest sea coast in the world. Canadian territory also extends far into the sea.

The next most significant physical feature that forms Canada's boundary (and it pales by comparison) is the height of land between Québec and parts of Maine and New Hampshire.

Except for the height of land in Quetico Park, the remaining significant physical features are only physical in part: an artificial line drawn through much of the Great Lakes and connecting waterways; and a similar artificial line drawn through the Rainy River watershed and through Lake of the Woods.

The International Boundary between Canada and the US runs through four of the five Great Lakes: Superior, Huron, Erie and Ontario. The lakes themselves do not act as a border.

As a native Vancouverite, the actual founding of Vancouver was sometime in the late 1800's. In the middle 1800's, there were two small settlements along Burrard Inlet, the body of water that borders Vancouver's north extremity: one was Granville, the other Hastings. They were both driven by the logging industry and ran their respective sawmills. By the mid 1880's the two communities became incorporated into the City of Vancouver. A horrific fire in 1886 destroyed virtually everything along the waterfront but with the arrival of Canada's first trans-continental railway in 1887(the CPR), lots were being sold to British immigrants. By 1910, there were nearly 100,000 people in the city. By 2000 Vancouver boasted a population of more than 750,000. Today, Greater Vancouver encompasses the cities of Vancouver, Burnaby, Richmond, West Vancouver, North Vancouver, Port Moody, Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, New Westminster, Surrey and Langley with a combined population of about 2 million.
