The lens of a digital camera has a certain focal length, expressed in mm. For example, a 50mm lens has a field of view that approximates what we see with our eyes looking straight ahead. A 25mm wide-angle lens has a field of view that approximates what we see with our eyes when we turn our head from side to side.

The shorter the focal length of a lens, the wider the field of view. The longer the focal length of a lens, e.g. 300mm, the narrower the field of view. Of course, a narrow field of view is equivalent to zooming in to a far object, like when we look into binoculars.

A lens can either have a fixed focal length, e.g. 25mm, 50mm, 300mm, etc. or can have a range of focal lengths, e.g. 25mm - 100mm, 50mm - 300mm, etc.

A lens that has a range of focal lengths is called a zoom lens. The zoom factor of the lens is calculated by dividing the maximum focal length by the minimum focal length. That zoom factor is the "X" you are referring to.

For example:

1. A 25mm - 100mm lens is a 100/25 = 4x zoom lens.

2. A 50mm - 300mm lens is a 300/50 = 6x zoom lens.

3. A 50mm - 200mm lens is also a 200/50 = 4x zoom lens.

4. A 100mm - 400mm lens is also a 400/100 = 4x zoom lens.

So knowing the zoom factor of a lens alone does not tell you what its minimum and maximum focal lengths are. Both examples 1, 3 and 4 above are 4x zoom lenses, but example 1 has a minimum focal length that is a wide-angle and allows us to take wide landscape shots or include all our classmates in one shot. Example 4 has a maximum focal length that is a long telephoto and allows us to bring far object near.

DSLR stands for digital single lens reflex. The cameras use a mechanical mirror system and a pentaprism to direct light from the lens to an optical viewfinder on the back of the camera.

Simply, they are just cameras with interchangeable lenses.

One way I know of, if it's just water, is to submerge it in a bucket or bowl of rice. The rice will absorb the water, and draw it out if it got into some cracks. It's a fairly well known home remedy. If there's actual damage to the circuitry or hardware, unless you're very comfortable repairing electronics manually, you might want to think about getting it repaired at a shop, or even a handy friend, if you've got one.

Yes. Your sound card must have the proper inputs for this. Talk to the folks at the computer stores. Talking is still free !....BB You need a video capture card to convert the analog signal from your VCR to digital. These capture cards range quite a bit in quality but are readily available online and in computer electronics stores. However, if you are transferring home movies I recommend using a video transfer service so that you get the best quality. StashSpace.Com does a good job, lets you edit online before burning DVDs and is only $6.95 a tape.

Paper Piercing Paper piercing is a technique used in scrapbooking. The basic tenet to the technique is this: create a pattern on a piece of paper or cardstock with pierced holes through the paper. The pattern can be created either by laying a template or an image copy over the paper and piercing the pattern through the template, or by freehand creating the image or words on the paper. The piercing can be performed by a long needle or a special piercing tool sold at scrapbooking stores. Once the piercing has been completed, you can ink or chalk around it to give the image or word or letter dimension. This technique can be used to create images, words, letters, or any other design to use as an accent or background for a scrapbook page or greeting card. Paper Piecing Paper piecing is a technique used in scrapbooking to create images or accents to custom fit your scrapbook page. The technique involves cutting a pattern of an image (such as a cartoon character) out of various pieces of patterned paper and cardstock, then putting them together to form the image. For example, a paper piecing of Garfield might have his body parts cut out of an orange fuzzy paper and his night shirt cut out of patterned paper, and once it's pieced together properly and detailed with markers, pens and chalk it will appear as Garfield. Often paper piecing patterns are images cut out of coloring book pages, but it can involve any number of templates or even freestyle cutting.

The short answer is "yes." A few years ago I bought my wife a Canon PowerShot A520, a 4 mp camera with a 4x optical zoom. It still takes excellent photographs. The newer Canon powershots have optical image stabilization (IS) that minimizes camera shake. I believe IS is even more important than an upgrade from 4 mp to 8mp.

First of all put your camera onto the right mode (there is a little picture of a video camera that must be in line with the silver dash). Then focus your lens on what you want to film. To record you have to press the little round button to the right of your display screen; it is the second one down from the top and has 3 tiny pictures to the left of it - a back view of a camera (on top), a red dot (in the middle) and below a small blue symbol (not 100% sure what it is? :S) When you have finished recording press the button again to stop filming. Hope this helped!

Any of the Digital Rebel SLRs will meet your needs. The least expensive model currently is the Rebel XS.

The 50D is a nice upgrade - more features and more durable construction, but may be overkill for a casual photographer.

If you're going to spend additional money, I would buy better lenses before buying a more expensive body. I suggest the EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS (about $950) - this is an outstanding general purpose lens, MUCH better than the cheapo kit lens that comes with the low end Rebels. The 24-105 F4/L is another outstanding choice.

SLR stands for single lens reflex. This is the type of camera in which the image goes into the lens and is reflected by a mirror into your eye at the viewfinder. You therefore see exactly what the lens is seeing. This type of camera also usually allows you to remove the lens and replace it with another, such as a wide-angle lens by a telephoto, etc. An SLR now can either be a film camera or a digital camera.

It probably only turns on sometimes because it is broken. Talk to someone who knows more about cameras, and ask them is they know how to fix it. Or, if the warranty hasn't expired, you can send it back to the company and see if the company can fix it.

MF stands for Manual Focus.

If you look lower left of the lens right beside the mega pixel print you see a button. Push button and turn lens ring to add adapter if you want to add additional accessories like lenses hood, or filters. If your question is come off like the newer canon cameras leaving just the camera body then no. I guess if you need a new lens you could disassemble the camera and replace it but i wouldnt suggest that.
