Yes Red ear slider turtles hibernate. If you have a lamp though it might not because it doesn't know when it's cold. So if you want it to hibernate then turn off it's lamp in the winter, so it can experience what it's like to be asleep for a whole season.
by the way you have described it it sounds as if it is a yellow bellied slider, if it has to red marks on the sides of its cheeks/head it will be a red eared slider.
Loggerhead Turtles are considered endangered. They eat Horseshoe Crabs and eggs, and without Loggerheads the Horseshoe Crab population would grow. Since they eat Razor Clams that population would drop, causing the Horseshoes population to drop as well. But diamond Back Terrapin also eat Razor Clams so their pop. is going to drop as well. Striped Bass, Sanderling, and Grackle all eat Horseshoe Crabs and their eggs. All of those populations would increase and the Horseshoes would decrease. Just a really long, never ending chain reaction.
Turtles sleep with their eyes closed under or above water. They tend to be cranky if you wake them up though (trust me, I know) If it is the winter you have to watch out to make sure that they don't try to hibernate though. If you keep waking them up and they start to stop eating than they are very likely to die. Winter is the roughest part of a turtle's life in captivity. Keep them warm and have a light so that they never know that winter has come and gone.
yes i think it would be a very bad idea considering if u are asking this question you propably dont know much about turtles and how you can't just take an egg i would talk to a wildlife person and do a lot of research first but better yet, just get one from a pet store
Take it to a herp experienced vet ASAP! A broken carapace is nothing to mess around with.
Occasionally, yes. If it wasn't, turtles would have died out a long time ago.
Usually, turtles will give pretty clear signs indicating that it's time to mate, like playing with their hair, touching your arm when they laugh, or getting really close to your ear when they want to tell you something. These may seem like small, insignificant indicators, but trust me, bro, these have led to some amazing nights for this Answers.com answerer.
How big is the turtle? If it's large enough to get hold of a piece of you, yes.
The most famous insect that a turtle would love to eat is a worm. But other insects to.

About $15 with the store Petco shopper card and about $20-22 without.
i fed my Painted turtle ReptoMin and worms for almost a year, then it went 3 or 4 months with out eating anything!
i thought for sure he was a goner, but he started eating ALOT! the last 2 or 3 days :)
Now I don't know if that is normal or not, it started just b4 winter, so i thought he was in Hibernation ,but it is still winter so I'm not sure why he stopped / started eating again.
and I'm not sure but i think he may have been eating small stuff /like kinda filter feeding during the time that it did not seem like he was eating.
yes, they can eat vegtables and it is good for them. you can also give them fruits like bannana or strawberries but only regulary. Lettuce is good for them as it has lot of nutruls however do not fed iceberg lettuce and go for romaniam lettuce because icebergs one have no nutrens at all.
Yes, turtles can live in tap water but it is important to get a water conditioner to remove any chemicals that may be in the water. A water filter is also good to remove impurities and keep water fresher longer.
Make sure first that you are eliminating any other possbilities for your babys reason for not eating. Does he have a sunning area? Is there enough water in your tank? Also make sure check the water temperature. Normal temp should be between 82-85F for sick or young turtles. A sustained temp. between 65-72F can contribute to loss of appetite and cause respiratory infection. Try small live feeder fish. Crickets only as a treat. Chopped green beans, carrot tops, dandelion. Make sure is is getting enough calcium and minerals. Cuttlebones are good.
Pretty much anything, But usually they crave meet, or fish in that manner.
As they grow they develop more, and more to plant's and veggies.
But for now just feed them any circumstance under the previous list.
1. Crab meet
2. Worm's (chopped is easer for them to swallow.)
3. Hot dog ( Once again chopped, easer to swallow.)
Just feed them that, and they should be good to go!
Good luck.
There's a good article on Wikipedia - see related link for a picture.
Turtles are herbivores.(they eat veggies)
Some type of vegetable are lettuce or carrot. I DON`T RECOMMEND you to feed brocolli.
You can feed them grape leaves. Also for fruits, you can feed them figs.
Actually, depending on the type of turtle you're referring to, turtles in general ARE omnivores, if you include land, aquatic, and semi-aquatic turtles.
Type 1:Land turtles/tortoises. Most species of this type are almost always herbivores. Examples include Box turtles and Harriet, the famous, formerly lived Galapagos turtle. (deceased in 2006)
Type 2: Aquatic turtles. Depending on the species, they are carnivores, consisting of mostly meat, with a small percentage of vegetables. Examples include sea turtles such as Leatherbacks, and Loggerheads.
Type 3: Semi Aquatic turtle
These kinds of turtles are mostly omnivores, meaning that they eat 50% of fruits and veggies and 50% meat, but this could depend on the environments that they live in. Hatchings tend to prefer a protein-based diet while older turtles tend to lean towards a more vegetarian-based diet. Examples include map turtles, painted turtles, and many pond slider species such as Red Eared Slider, and Yellow-Bellied slider.

they dont hibernate they brumate. In the wild they start brumating in October when the temperature reaches below 10 °C (50 °F) and they come back up in March. In captivity they cant brumate at room temperature.
You don't need a filter for the tank. But if you don't have one, you will have to change the water every week, or every other week at least. When you have a filter -- like the Whisper filter -- you only have to change the water a few times a year.
from my experience they dont eat when you watch them.lol
First find a good lake, creek, river or stream that your sure has turtles in it, depending on what type of turtle your looking for get turtle food sticks you can get them at your local pet store, grind them into powder then sprinkle it on meat, it doesnt really matter what kind of meat turtkey works really good. then take the meat and put it on a river bank wait awhile and hide, eventually a turtle will come make sure the turtle isn't big enough to bite ur fricken head off, then go and book it and catch the little guy. remember if your going to keep him find out if it's legal first and find out their tank requirements, if not always return something where you found it, (expecially your friends wallet) good luck
The sea turtle's limbs are flippers adapted for swimming. The forelimbs are long and paddle-like and the hind flippers serve as rudders, stabilizing and directing the turtle as it swims.
