Cat Maintenance

Cat maintenance focuses on the hair and claws of the cat. Combing a cat’s fur is an excellent way of getting rid of hair balls and checking for fleas. One should provide a scratching post to keep the cat's nails trimmed.

How do you let a motherless kitten who is over a month old and has been fed only Brinta oatmeal eat Purina Cat Chow?

No kitten should be fed a diet of strictly oatmeal! Cats are carnivores and need meat protein as the major part of their diets. Get Royal Canin Babycat dry food for the kitten. The kibbles are tiny enough for baby kittens to chew. Keep a bowl of this available for the kitten at all times, along with a bowl of fresh water. Also, buy some Wellness canned kitten food and feed one rounded tablespoonful about 3 times a day on a small plate or saucer. When the kitten is about 8 weeks of age, replace the Royal Canin Babycat food with Wellness Healthy Kitten. (Wellness pet foods do not contain corn or wheat. They are specially made with human-grade meat.) Nikki the Kittylady

If a kitten is weak how do you keep it warm and fed?

You may have to wrap your kitten and keep it on a heating pad, warm, not hot and check and make sure the pad isn't getting to hot where it will burn it.

They have some kitten milk at our Walmart, if your kitten is real weak try feeding it with a syringe or eye dropper about every two hours. They also have little , like doll bottles , for feeding small animals too at Walmart.

The most obvious would be a screen door. If that isn't possible, try setting kitty up in her own room with water and toys for the time you have your door open.

Can a declawed cat survive outside?

Answer

Perhaps it could, if it is a very lucky cat. But its chances of survival are not good.

Answer

A cat's instincts are very good, and if they got into the woods, it may catch a mouse or squirrel if it is lucky. If you have lost a declawed cat, don't worry. Its instincts may lead it back home soon.

What is the best dry and wet food to feed an 8 month old male kitten?

Well, first of all, the worst food you can feed your cat is supermarket brand cat food. TV commercials for supermarket brand cat food always talk about the "wholesome ingredients" and "choice cuts of meat" in their food, but this is an outright lie. Most supermarket brands -- such as Purina, Friskies, Whiskas, Fancy Feast, Tender Vittles, etc., etc. -- are made with extremely low-quality "meat." It is actually really disgusting. These brands are made with all the leftover animal parts, including ground-up chicken beaks and feet, cow eyeballs, intestines, and something called "Animal Digest." Animal digest is essentially a mishmash of leftover parts; it can include rats, roadkill animals, and animals that were euthanized at animal shelters -- including dogs and cats. That's right, cats. These brands also include something called "ash," which is burnt animal remains. It is absolutely revolting.

Luckily, there are better foods available, made with high-quality meat that is fit for human consumption. They are more expensive than supermarket brands -- up to $2 a can -- but they will keep your cat healthy, and will add years to his life. It is well worth the money to keep your beloved pet healthy and happy. And in fact, you will most likely save money in the long run: since better cat food means a healthier cat, you will save hundreds, even thousands of dollars on veterinary bills.

High-quality cat food brands are sold at most pet stores, including Petco, Pet Stop, and petnetdirect.com. Some high-quality brand names include: Innova/Evo, Weruva, Max Cat, PetGuard, California Natural, Instinct, Prairie, Natural Balance, Solid Gold, Merrick, Wellness, Eagle Pack, Newman's Own, WYSONG, Precise, etc., etc.

If you really cannot afford to buy this food for your cats, then Iams brand is an acceptable second-choice. Iams is a supermarket brand, but it is of a higher quality than most supermarket brands. It's not as good as Innova/Evo, Weruva, Max Cat, etc., etc., but it is better than the other supermarket brands.

Although it is not strictly necessary, it is a good idea to feed your cat both wet and dry food. Wet food is more fatty than dry food, so a diet consisting of nothing but wet food can potentially cause weight problems. But more importantly, dry food helps scrape plaque off of the cat's teeth, giving him healthier teeth and gums, and better-smelling breath. My personal favorite dry food brand is Innova/Evo: most cats love it, and it makes their coat super-shiny and soft.

Also, although it is not strictly necessary, it's a good idea to give your cat some variety with his diet. Having variety in your diet is good for humans, and for cats too. Also, sometimes cats get bored eating the same thing every day. Whenever I go to Pet Stop to buy cat food, I always buy a few different flavors of each different brand, so as to give them as much variety as possible. My cats get a different wet food every night, and during the day they get Innova/Evo dry food.

How much is kitten formula?

It would depend on which one you want. The best would probably to go to PetCo or PetSmart and look for some. I've seen it range from the price of $2 up to $59.

Is brocili poison food for cats?

It can make the cat sick but, depending on the amount, should not kill the cat.

Broccoli is made of cellulose, which most cats cannot digest due to the length of their digestive tract. Most mammals cannot fully digest cellulose, but herbivores can manage it better than carnivores. This is why cats often eat and then vomit up grass.

The cat may vomit it up or have digestive issues, but overall they should be okay.

What is the difference between neutered male and nonspayed female cats?

Neutering or spaying, doesn't matter the animal, will calm them down. The unspayed female will go into heat a number of times per year. They will howl for a mate during the night and keep you up. No matter what animal, they should be fixed so you don't have to go through the agony of watching them be in heat. Also, it's better for the animal to be fixed. I know with female rabbits they can get an ovarian cancer just like us if they're not fixed. Neutered males act very calm and slick, they become more attached to their owner than if they weren't neutered.

Do cats jaws dislocate?

Yes, if they hit it hard enough on something, it will dislocate.

How old can a kitten leave its mom for good?

Kittens should not leave their mothers until they are AT LEAST ten weeks old, preferably twelve or thirteen weeks.

Why does my 8 week old kitten keep pooping on the sofa?

At 8 weeks old, kittens have just started to deal with their own droppings, instinctively burying them. Even when they are much older, some outside cats will never consistently cover their feces. They may do it on grass, on furniture, and other places, except that when loose dirt is available, they may yield to the urge to bury their mess.

How much does it cost to nude a cat?

By "naked cat" you must mean the fascinating sphynx. Like any pure-bred animal sphynx are pricey and a kitten can run you well over a thousand dollars. If you are lucky enough to find someone who for some reason can't or won't keep their sphynx or sphynxes, they may sell to you for under a thousand a cat, but expect to pay $500 to $800 and sometimes more for one, even in these circumstances.

Sphynxes are not truly hairless, but covered with thin, short, soft down. Having no fur they need to live in a warm house to be comfortable. And they can have other special needs, as well.

If you love the breed but decide owning could prove too much, you can, as of this writing in November 2014, buy an adorable, carefree, handmade, plush sphynx cat on Etsy for half or less the price of the real thing.

Will feeding raw ground turkey to your cat give it worms?

No, unless the turkey has already been infected. It is always advisable to freeze poultry or game (rabbit for example) for a week or so to kill off any bacteria that may be present.

If you wish to feed raw turkey, it may be best to feed a chunk, instead of ground meat. The reason being is any bacteria on the surface prior to mincing is mixed throughout the meat when it is minced. Also, feeding chunks of raw turkey (or any meat) once in a while has the added benefit of keeping a cat's teeth and gums clean and healthy as the meat rubs off any plaque on the teeth and encourages blood-flow in the gums.
