The Schroedle Dairy was my grandfather's dairy. The actual address was 2923 S. Normal and was established in 1915. My grandfathers name was Peter Schroedle. How are you related? My grandfather was also named Richard Schroedle. I remember him refer to his brother Jake. Grampa didn't live near Crane Company, here worked there. He lived at 29th and Canal St. This was around the block from where I understand the dairy was on Normal Ave. My dad is Lawrence Schroedle. He remembers the barn being there. Do you know if they actually kept cows there or was this some type of distribution point for the milk? Did your dad drive a team of horses or did they have trucks? I've made contact w/Bill Schroedle on this topic and he says that the dairy started in 1915.

The Morrison Hotel, the "Hotel of Perfect Service," was a premier Chicago hotel by the 1920s. Located in the center of the city at the corner of Clark and Madison, it boasted 3,400 rooms, featured two lobbies, the Cameo Ballroom, and two large restaurants, the Boston Oyster House and the Terrace Garden Wonder Restaurant.

The Tower addition to the hotel, completed in 1927 gave the hotel the distinction as the World's Tallest Hotel and offered a spectacular view of the city and Lake Michigan. In 1965 the hotel was razed to make space for the First National Bank Building (known today as Bank One Plaza).

As a really big hotel, the Morrison made sure it was on a lot of postcards, which turn up pretty regularly on eBay. By the 1960s, they had a revolving restaurant on top of the building, which went -- when the hotel was demolished -- to the new Holiday Inn on Lake Shore Drive. That building is now the W Hotel, I think, and the room is still there, although I don't know if it still revolves.

My family had a sign shop serving the convention industry in the Morrison Hotel in the 1950s. I was just a kid then, but I remember the revolving restaurant on the top of the tower called the Carousel. I ate there many times. My dad married my stepmom in 1962 and we had the reception in the Cotillion Room which I think was on the second floor. There was also a drug store with a lunch counter in the lobby, a coffee shop right off of the lobby, and a barber shop at the front Madison Street entrance to the hotel.

The headquarters of the Democratic Party of Cook County was on the fifth floor and Mayor Daly (Senior) had an office there. There were also some colorful figures such as bookies and members of the Chicago outfit who hung out there.

I have a lot of good memories of the Morrison and wish hotels like that existed today.

If your token was made before 1909, when the new Chicago street address system was adopted, the 172-176 N. Clark location would have been north of the river, with a (1N) address at the north bank of the river.

If the token is made of copper and is about the size of a penny, then it may date before the Great Fire of 1871 and perhaps be a token used by the infamous "runners" who enticed newcomers to a shady hotels or boarding houses. However, the word "bar" sounds too contemporary for pre-1871.

Yes, I do remember the Mod Shop. I grew up on the corner of Michigan Avenue and 118th Street above Hufnagel's Bakery and attended Scanlan Elementary. My recollection is that the Mod Shop was on the west side of Michigan Avenue between The Home Store on 116th Street and the busier shopping district 5-6 blocks north of there (which was also the location of a huge Gately's store. I have a distinct image of the storefront and logo as I used to walk past it often on my way to and from Ray's penny candy store (also on south Michigan Avenue). I sort of remember the Mod Shop being there prior to 1972 (although it may have been preceded by a "record store" that catered to the same clientele.) I was only 10-12 years old at the time. !

my uncle has this old travel trunk with a closet with original wooden hangars with the right side being dresser drawers stands approx.4.5 feet tall by 2 ft depth opens by latches and has a latch lock he says it was used by the rich to carry their clothing when travelling on ships such as the queen Mary hes not to sure what its worth .
