The flapping sound is probably your engine backfiring, due to bad plug wires. I had the same issue on an 03 Turbo and couldn't figure out what it was. It would occur under heavy acceleration. The car would miss several times (the flapping sound?? when it punched the gas. I put new plugs and wires in, and the problem was corrected.

The pulley pivots away to relieve tension using a ratchet or breaker bar. The belt should then slip right off. Look for a decal under hood that shows routing of the belt for installation.
