For communications needs there would be some form of closed-circuit ( incongruously also called Open Line) telephones at each major pumping or distribution center to keep in touch. there might be remote control devices akin to engine-room telegraphs as used on ships. I have seen one ( photo of a museum exhibit_ which has pump power settings on it- as opposed to engine speed commands, this was used with a hydraulic dredge. If you're a girl, you could try Sims out, you can build buildings on the computer without the more technical end. If you want to do something more hands on you can try: home improvements, wood working, landscaping, etc. I know that most of my friends that are civil engineers enjoy those types of pass-times, and they seem to go along with the field.
