Civil Engineering

Civil Engineering is a profession of designing and executing structural works that serve the general public, like houses, buildings, roads, etc. A Civil Engineer is an engineer trained in the design and construction of public works, such as bridges or dams, and other large facilities.

What is the difference between Bending and Direct Stress?

-> when a structural body gets deviated from its original position or from its centroidal axis due to externally applied load, then it is termed as BENDING

->DIRECT STRESS is the stress which act normal to the plane

-> stress and bending are the two different things. stress produced by load per area & bending is the effect produced by load and stress.

Definition of moment of resistance of beams?

thats means load

In some countries (Greece for sure) by "moment of resistance" we mean Section Modulus, which is Z=I/y, where I: moment of inertia, y: distance from the neutral axis to the most extreme fibre

Function of trimmer resistor?

The trimmer resistor is a calibration device used to correct (trim) the resistance of some other resistor. An example might be the feedback loop of an op-amp in common mode. If you wanted a gain of two, you might use a resistor divider with a two to one ratio. Resistors have tolerance, however, so the stated value will not be exact. You place a trimmer resistor in series with one of the other resistors, picking the value so that, if the two other resitors were exact, the trimmer is set to midpoint, and that the trimmer's range covers the expected tolerance of the other resistors. Then you calibrate the circuit to the expected gain using the trimmer.

What is looped domain?

A looped domain is a series of chromatin fibres that are arranged into a loop. These are arranged into chromosomes. For more help view the related link.

Differences between dumpy and tilting level?

in dumpy level the line of sight is perpendicular to vertical axis. But in tilting level the line of sight need not be perpendicular to vertical axis .the instrument is roughly leveled in a tripod stand with respect to bubble tube & thus making the instrument approximately vertical...then it is tilted with a finely pitched tilting screw which tilts the telescope wrt to vertical...it has advantage that due to tilting levelling can be done quickly and accurately!!

What is the definition of PT Beam?

The bottom 12" of the beam is in the slab and the top 12" is an upturn, so it does make sense from a constructability standpoint. However, calculating the horizontal shear flow at mid-height is greatly complicated by the presence of PT. There is also the issue of the dead and stressing ends being near the joint.

What is a skirt pile?

A skirt pile can refer to a pile of clothing in a female's dressing room. Also, a skirt pile can be a pile of dirt or rocks that are pushed to the side when clearing with large equipment.

Difference between deep and shallow foundation?

Shallow foundation:

A type of foundation that is used when the earth directly beneath a structure has sufficient bearing capacity to sustain the loads from the structure

Deep foundation:

A type of foundation that is used when the soil near the ground surface is weak.

1. Light, flexible structure: older residential construction, residential construction which include a basement, and in many commercial structures,

2. Nice soil condition: hard, uniform soil.

3. Cheaper than deep foundation

4. Easier construction

5. Typically types: spreading footing foundation, slab-on-grade foundation, pad foundation, strip foundation, and raft foundation.

Spreading footing foundation: controlled by several factors: lateral and vertical capacity, penetration through near surface layers likely to change volume due to frost heave or shrink-swell.

Mat-slab foundation: the distribution of loads in a mat slab helps reduce differential settlement due to the non-uniform building loads

1. Heavy, rigid structure: other uncommon building, such as large bridge, tower, and the Empire State Building.

2. Poor soil condition: liquefaction, soft clay and sands.

3. Typically more expansive

4. More complex to construct and more time than shallow foundation.

5. Typically types: battered piles, bearing piles, caissons, and friction piles.

Friction piles: Friction piles obtain a greater part of their carrying capacity by skin friction or adhesion. This tends to occur when piles do not reach an impenetrable stratum but are driven for some distance into a penetrable soil. Their carrying capacity is derived partly from end bearing and partly from skin friction between the embedded surface of the soil and the surrounding soil.

End bearing piles: End bearing piles are those which terminate in hard, relatively impenetrable material such as rock or very dense sand and gravel. They derive most of their carrying capacity from the resistance of the stratum at the toe of the pile.

What is difference between combined footing and raft foundation?

A Combined footing is a long footing supporting two or more columns in one row. While a Mat or Raft foundation is a large footing, usually supporting several columns in two or more rows.

What is full form of tb?

Tuberculosis is the long form of TB. It is a contagious disease that is easily spread and attacks the respiratory system.

What is splice length of bar?

lap length in tension including anchorage value of hooks in flexural tension shall be greater of development length or 30 times dia of bar.

In compression, its equal to development length.

In general, 50 times dia is provided.

Why is gypsum added to Portland cement?

Gypsum is added to portland cement to retard C3A hydration

What does it mean to beam flatteringly?

Depends on context. Without context, I would assume it to mean beam- basically meaning, to smile or dealing with joy- flatteringly- to flatter is to compliment. Thus beam-flatteringly would mean to smile or show joy in an enjoyable manner for the receiver. ie. That pretty girl saw you beaming at her and was flattered.

What is the difference between bending moment and deflection?

monment is force by distance however the deflection is a displacement of point measured by distance

What is physical propety?

Physical property is a property that a substance has which can be measured. For instance, some properties are melting points or boiling points.

Why settlement calculations are important for foundation designs?

To prevent your building, roads or any structure from sink. From these calculations, you may get the suitable foundation for the structures base on your budget.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of compacting concrete using a vibrator?

The main disadvantage of compacting concrete using a cement vibrator is the noise. The advantages of compacting concrete using a cement vibrator is to remove trapped air and excess water which then allows the concrete settle firmly.

What is the shear strength of quartz?

The strength of quartz depends on the flaw size. Typically the strength of quartz is about 8000 psi (55MPa) in tension. If severely flawed it could be as slow as half that value, and if it is stressed in water it could be even lower. If perfect without flaws it will exceed 40,000 psi (275 MPa). I would use about 6000 psi in general and use a large safety factor. Most codes use a safety factor of 5 for glass to be certain in case there are hidden flaws.

In shear I would use the tension value
