Cold War politics between, in the media oversimplification, Khrushchev on the Soviet Side and Kennedy on the US and Western side ( Ich Bin ein Berliner- I am a Berliner!) went the slogan. the crisis ultimately culminated in the erection and fortification of the now-defunct Berlin wall. While Berlin was a divided city since the end of War II (and there were separate US, British, French, and Soviet sectors, the infamous wall was not actually erected until after l96l. Thus the Berlin WALL proper did not figure in the Berlin airlift in the late forties.

a global competition, known as the cold war existed between the democratic united states and its allies and the communist soviet union and its supporters. By 1948, both sides POSSESSED nuclear weapons, nuclear weapons cause mass desctruction by using atomic reactions to release gigantic amounts of power. The cold war was dangerous even though armies from rival never assembled fought each other.

In military and political terms the Korean War ended with a stalemate and the preservation of the North and South Korean status quo. Regardless of being overrun by American and United Nations forces, North Korea was able to survive due to the Chinese intervention ordered by Mao Zedong. Due to political considerations and to avoid escalation of broader land war into the Chinese mainland the United States decided to an armistice. Due to these circumstances some Chinese and North Koreans drew the conclusion the Korean War was in fact a victory as opposed to a military stalemate.

Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev wanted the Cold War to end. He wanted it replaced with peaceful coexistence between democratic and communist powers.

The arms race created two rival power blocks after the England developed the Dreadnoughts. This is what lead up to the outbreak of World War I and Britain joining forces with France and Russia.

Vast quantities of materials and effort were put into weapons development. If these had been focused on other activities, many things in the world might be different. The world was divided into two armed camps, each very suspicious of the other.

The attempts to develop a powerful government during the post-Revolutionary America was prevented by a revolutionary ideology. This ideology teaches suspicions and natural rights to all the authorities of the government.

Francis Powers was shot down on May 1, 1960. He was convicted of espionage by the Soviets and sentenced to 10 years in prison. He was exchanged for some Soviet spies after serving less then two years of the sentence.
