Comet Encke has an orbital period of about 3.3 years, so it will next be visible from Earth in 2024. However, it may not always be visible to the naked eye depending on its position in the sky and proximity to the Earth.

The American humorist, author and Mississippi riverboat pilot Samuel Langhorn Clemens, who wrote under the pen name "Mark Twain", was born two weeks after Halley's Comet made its closest approach to the Earth in 1835.

Clements wrote, near the end of his life, "I came in with Halley's Comet in 1835. It is coming again next year, and I expect to go out with it. It will be the greatest disappointment of my life if I don't go out with Halley's Comet. Comets glow because the Sun's light and light-pressure vaporize the frozen gasses of the comet's nucleus, and light up the gas and dust.

Meteors are typically the size of a grain of sand, or a grain of dust; big ones may be the size of a grain of rice. Thousands of meteors like this strike the Earth each hour. Once a week or so, space rocks the size of a softball or a basket ball strike the Earth, and some of these actually make it through the atmosphere and hit the ground.

Comets are far larger, typically a few miles or more in diameter. They are mostly frozen gas, and the ice binds a few rocks and a lot of dust. Astronomers have compared them to "dirty snowballs".

Halley's comet's nucleus is the solid, icy core at the center of the comet. It is composed of frozen gases, dust, and rocky material, and is typically several kilometers in diameter. The tail of a comet is over a million miles long.

We don't know. I've read estimates that Halley's Comet is probably large enough to survive another ten million years or so.

The problem, of course, is that a comet is like a "dirty snowball" in composition. Rocks and dust, loosely bound together by ice. While out in the depths of space, the snowball is perfectly stable. But when the comet approaches the Sun, the ice begins to vaporize and the vapor carries away some of the dust. This forms the tail of the comet.

With each approach, the comet becomes smaller and less stable. Some comets experience explosions, when a pocket of vaporized ice is trapped and then bursts carrying chunks of rock and dust away. We cannot predict when that will happen to Halley's Comet, but we know that someday, it WILL.

And comets do occasionally collide with things; things like Earth, or Mars, or Jupiter, or asteroids. A lot could happen.

Comets are dangerous because, they are pulled by gravity and when they hit the surface of a planet the force pushes it down and if you were in the way of the comet you would surely be dead. i hope that answered you question Ireland92109

Uranus was initially mistaken for a comet by William Herschel in 1781 when he first observed it through a telescope. It was later confirmed to be a planet due to its consistent orbit and lack of a visible coma or tail, typical of comets.

Both planets and comets in our Solar system share the same thing. The fact that they orbit Sol our local star. The planets orbit in a regular timely fashion in elliptical orbits that keep them about the same distance from the sun all the time. A comet has an elliptical orbit that takes it way out in our system and then it falls back in and comes close to the sun before heading back out again.
