Concerta

Concerta is an extended release version of Ritalin or methylphenidate providing symptom relief for up to 12 hours. Concerta also features an osmotic release system which makes the drug less abusable.

329 Questions

Can you take another Concerta a few hours after you came down from one 54 mg or could i take an adderall instead?

I wouldn't unless that's what the doctors orders are. If you are only supposed to take one only take one. I work for a psychiatrist and although I have seen them switch someone from Concerta to Adderall or vice versa, I have never seen them prescribe both at once or recommend that they switch in the middle of the day.

Concerta is long acting and although you might feel a come down feeling after it peaks, it is active in your body for on average 12 hours from the time it is taken. If you take the Adderall while the Concerta is still in your system I doubt it would make you feel better and could even make you feel worse.

Is it safe to take Concerta for 30 days straight more strictly speaking about the side effects of weight loss and anxiety etc?

Note: It is extremely important that you and your doctor work closely together while taking Concerta.

Concerta is a newer, long acting preparation of Methylphenidate - which is the medication name for Ritalin.

It has been out for several years in the USA and Canada, and many other countries in the world.

Despite the fact that it has been around for quite some time, I still see dosing mistakes in patients who are sent to my office.

Allow me to explain to you how Concerta should be dosed.

To start off, we need to go back to the original Ritalin.

Here are the dosing guidelines for Ritalin:

Recommended daily max = 60 mg

Timing: as each dose only lasts 3-4 hours, it is generally dosed 3 times daily - i.e. morning, noon and 4 pm

It is not dosed too late in the day, as it may lead to insomnia

Children would be started at 5 mg twice to three times daily, and the dose would be increased upwards as needed.

When Concerta was developed, they used a fascinating technology called OROS. OROS refers to: osmotic-controlled release oral delivery system. What OROS does, is use the water in the gut to cause the medicine to be absorbed gradually, through osmosis. Suffice it to say that this new pill takes a medicine that has to be taken 3 times daily, and makes it once per day. You can see a short video of how this works here.

Concerta comes in 4 doses:

18 mg

27 mg

36 mg

54 mg

The way to convert Concerta doses into the equivalent of Ritalin doses is this:

Take 22% of the Concerta dose, and that becomes the effective Ritalin dose, three times daily. In other words, the initial 22% is quickly released, and the whole rest of the pill supports that dose.

You need to remember that not all of the medicine is released from the Concerta pill - about 10% is not absorbed.

So, here is a conversion:

18 mg Concerta = 4 mg Ritalin 3 times per day

27 mg Concerta = 6 mg Ritalin 3 times per day

36 mg Concerta = 8 mg Ritalin 3 times per day

54 mg Concerta = 12 mg Ritalin 3 times per day

Here is an example of how some people get into trouble: Let's say that a teen required 60 mg of Ritalin per day - i.e. 20 mg three times daily. If the doctor converts the dose of 60 mg Ritalin to 54 mg of Concerta - because they seem close, this can have dire consequences.54 mg of Concerta is like 12 mg of Ritalin 3 times per day, so there would be a significant dose drop from 20 mg 3 times per day to 12 mg 3 times per day (i.e. a 40 % dose reduction!). It would be no surprise if the people noticed a change and felt that Concerta wasn't working. In the recent past, there has been approval in the US for 72 mg of Concerta for teenagers if needed.Recent ADHD practice guidelines published by CADDRA - the Canadian ADHD Resource Alliance, suggest that teens and adults with ADHD may require up to 108 mg of Concerta daily.

To put these doses into perspective:

72 mg Concerta = 16 mg 3 times per day

90 mg Concerta = 20 mg 3 times per day

108 mg Concerta = 24 mg 3 times per day

To achieve these doses, you can use:

72 mg Concerta = two 36 mg tablets, or 54 mg + 18 mg

90 mg Concerta = 54 mg tablet + 36 mg tablet

108 mg Concerta = two 54 mg tablet

If you or your loved one was switched from another form of methylphenidate to Concerta, and it seemed that Concerta didn't work, please consider the information above.Concerta is a great preparation of methylphenidate, and can work very well. Don't give up on it unless you are sure you have had the right dose.

Can Concerta be taken with sleep aids?

I would be careful mixing any medications with sleep aids, especially ones that are narcotics based. There are many sleep aids that contain natural ingredients that are less likely to interact with other drugs. I would always consult my physician before taking a sleep aid with any medication. An all natural solution is here:

It is an amazing, all natural sleep aid and it works wonderfully!

Has anyone else had no results with Concerta or Strattera?

Plenty of people have "no results" on ADHD medications. For people who truly do have ADHD, most respond to one medication or another, so it is important to keep seeing your physician and trying different ones until one is found that works for you and has the fewest side effects. I find that almost always we can find a medication that will work, but no medication works for every person--and some people benefit from other types of treatment. The key, however, is making sure that the person actually has ADHD. If you don't have the disease, the medications won't help. So, see a physician and make sure to keep following-up even if you are noticing improvement on the medication you're trying.

I've had no luck with these two medications, but a ton of luck with Adderral. You have to find what works for you.

Hey I am 19 young male.. You are right the 3 medications( Adderall, Strattera, Concerta) Are all different. I took Concerta 18mg when I was 6th grade .. I took it all the way up to Senior Year in High School. It broke me out in acne when I was in 8th grade I had a serious case called Assist Acne. It was in my blood. We thought it was hormouns and it was a little. I was tested and found out that I was elrgic to the ingredience in concerta. But later on grew outta the elergic ingredience. I took adderal XR 10 mg. & 15mg In my late senior year.. It didn't help it was one of the worse medications I have ever taken. Always dizzy. loopy. In my own world and not focused. These medications made a big problem and interference with school. I got introuble started smoking and drinking in my senior high school.. Got kicked out of school for 21 days total in only 60 days.. I am now came back as a 5th year and taking stratera and it's not any better then Adderall but jsut as worse.. I am taken a 40mg and I failed on a test for education got a 4 out of a 100. And a normal student get 80 to 90 out of a 100. I never felt my self on strattera. Never focused in school.. Don't feel concentrating enough in school. or at home.. Always looopy.. The good side about it is when you get upset at someone or someone pisses you off it wares off and you forget about it.. But now I am going back on Conerta focused better in my academics and school.. And What I am doing.. so if you read this if you wanna really get serious about meds..

Go for concerta or ridalin same ingredience but concerta is more strenght in same ways.. But ridalin will change the whole thing about you and yourself... Take my word by it.. if you wanna ask anymore questions me email address is maxwelton_@hotmail.com

Can you smoke marijuana after taking Concerta 36mg?

Yeah, you're good. It's actually really good to grind it up and sprinkle it over your weed before you smoke. Concerta is probably the best thing you could've been perscribed! So toke up, man. Yes you can. I am a 23 y/o male, about 145lbs and I was on Concerta 54mg daily and I had no physical complications when I smoked marijuana while taking my medication. The only problem I encountered was that it intensified my high (I know it doesn't sound like a problem), basically I couldn't be in public or it would be VERY OBVIOUS I was inebriated and paranoia was unavoidable. Not to mention I have a predisposition for psychosis and smoking while on a stimulant (cocaine, amphetamines etc) can trigger a psychotic episode (as it did with me several times) but only if you are predisposed. Basically when you smoke marijuana while on a noticeable amount of Concerta, you don't get that "stupid high" but you get an energetic high and the appetite suppressing qualities of the Concerta prevents the would-be munchies! basically besides the occasional psycho-activity it made me feel more high and more aware of my high. it allowed me to utilize marijuana's ability to make you think of things in a new light, without forgetting my epiphanies. Instead of having the usual "spaced out" mental state I felt I had a state of introspective clairvoyance. Therefore I strongly recommend it to anyone who does not have a family or personal history with serious mental illnesses.. oh and please do NOT smoke Concerta or ANY other amphetamine as it does NOTHING but damage to your lungs. Methamphetamine in its crystalline form can be smoked but not any non-methyl based amphetamines including nearly all ADHD stimulant medications.

What are the difference between Concerta and adderall xr?

Most simply, they are two different drugs. Concerta is a sustained-release formulation of methylphenidate, and Adderall XR is an extended-release formulation of a mixture of amphetamine salts. It's like the difference between Ritalin and Adderall, which are the immediate-release forms. Both drugs are stimulants, usually prescribed for ADD/ADHD. Methylphenidate is said to not be as strong a stimulant as amphetamine, but is still controlled as tightly.

What is the doasge comparison of 54 Mg of Concerta to the dosage of Adderall XR?

First off the the two drugs are completely diffent substances. Yes, they are both FDA approved for the use of ADD and ADHD therapy, but Concerta falls under the class of methelphenadate type stimulants where as Adderall Xr is a stimulant medication that is derived from amphetamine and is made up of the 4 different salts which create a combination known as Amphetamine Salts. The dosage of 54 mg in Concerta would be comparable to the 30 mg. XR of Adderall, being that they are both the strongest dosage that you can possible obtain, but of course you may recvieve more than one dosage per day depending on individuals tolerance, weight, sex and height. Both drugs have stimulant effects but work on the brain differently.

Is Concerta considered a controlled drug?

Yes it's a schedule 2 controlled drug for abuse and addictive potential..

Wellbutrin and Concerta are two different medications used to treat mental health conditions. Wellbutrin, the brand name for bupropion, is primarily prescribed for depression and to help with smoking cessation. Concerta, which contains methylphenidate, is used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Both medications work on neurotransmitters in the brain but have distinct mechanisms and uses.

How does Concerta make you feel?

I just did it today in school. You concentrate on whatever you're doing. You are in the zone and get almost all of your answers right like on a test for example. It's for people with adhd and add. It makes you think you can accomplish anything like walk through walls, lol. It makes your body feel kinda numb and it lasts for about the whole day if you're new to the drug and haven't tooken it in your life. It's basically a happy pill that gets you extremely hyper and outrageously happy about everything you do.

What can worsen the symptoms?

Symptoms may be made worse by a number of conditions, such as temperature change (especially exposure to cold), touching the painful area, movement, and emotions or stress.
