Any constellation is a group of stars that appear to form some kind of pattern,

but have no connection with each other. They all happen to be in roughly the

same direction from us, but they're all at different distances. So there's no

such thing as a constellation's distance from us.

Virgo can be seen in the southern hemisphere during american autumn (september, october, etc) and in the northern hemisphere during american spring (May, etc). In the northern hemisphere you use the big dipper as a reference to find it and in the southern hemisphere you use the southern cross.

Because in mythology Orion bragged about his skills and Zeus was annoyed so he punished him by sending Scorpio to sting him but an admirer of Orion named Diana asked the gods if they could put Orion in the sky to remember him by. They agreed but as long as Scorpio was put next to him to warn against such nasty crimes. In Orion's last dying breaths he begged not to be placed near Scorpio That's why Orion is seen in the winter while Scorpio is seen in the summer.

We can only speculate, and different people may have different opinions. To understand the true motive, you would have to inquire of He who placed those stars in those particular places in the sky. Or else consult the ancient individuals who looked at that group of stars, decided what it looked like to them, and gave it the name Sagittarius.

In ancient times, the constellation was considered a small group of stars withinCentaurus, and was thought to have been an animal killed, on behalf of Centaurus. It was not separated from Centaurus until Hipparchus named it Therion (meaning beast) in the 200s BC. No particular animal was associated with it until the Latin translation of Ptolemy's work identified it with the wolf.
