Why do chicks chirp?

Chicks chirp as a flock activity. It is communication to both the hen and other chicks. A chick will chirp loudly if it is alone, or if it sees an unfamiliar animal approach (including the farmer.) Chicks chirp as a way of communicating group alertness, and they are sort of a collective conscious about sleep and waking. One chick chirping will wake the others up, and they will start chirping if they are active. Reduced chirping induces other chicks to sleep. In this way, they sleep and feed at the same time. They do things with the uniformity of a little battalion, and this is an instinctive strategy to keep the flock together.

Crickets chirp at different rates depending on their species and the temperature of their environment. Most species chirp at higher rates the higher the temperature is (approx. 60 chirps a minute at 13ºC in one common species; each species has its own rate). The relationship between temperature and the rate of chirping is known as Dolbear's Law. In fact, according to this law, it is possible to calculate the temperature in Fahrenheit by adding 39 to the number of chirps produced in 15 seconds by the snowy tree cricket common in the United States. To hear the mating call of other crickets, a cricket has ears located on its knees, just below the joint of the front legs. http://www.answers.com/topic/cricket

How do crickets respond to caffeine?

Hi,

it`s difficult to say. There are few articles which show stimulating effect of caffeine on locomotor activity of Drosophila. But in this case caffeine was given with food by long time. In other article you can find suggestion that acute treatment of caffeine gives inhibition effect, chronic treatment gives stimulating effect. I work on crickets and caffeine and my research shows something like this. After injections (acute treatment) I observe decrease of locomotor activity. Now I`m working on effects of caffeine after treatment with food. We will see what happen.

I don`t know anything about other effects .
