Is the change from woolen yarn to knitted sweater be reversible?

Yes, so long as the sweater hasn't felted. If it's a new sweater the process is simple. Undo the seams, find the end of the knitting of each piece, undo the knot and pull. The stitches should pull out easily.

However, if the sweater has been worn or washed in such a way that the stitches have started melding together, it will be impossible to unravel.

What does sp mean in crochet instructions?

Sp in crochet patterns means "space" as far as I know.

Generally, a space in crochet is created by the chain stitch(es) on the previous row/round.

If your pattern states to sc, (single crochet) in the next sp (space) it means to pull the yarn around the stitch (the chain stitches) rather than through the chain stitch as you'd do when working into your beginning chain.

How do you increase 12 stitches evenly across 111 stitches to obtain 123 stitches?

To figure out how to increase 13 stitches evenly across 100 stitches, you divide 100 by 13, which gives you 7.7. This means you want to increase every 7 or 8 stitches. It doesn't matter exactly where the increases are placed as long as they're distributed throughout the 100 stitches instead of all in one place. This will make for a nice even increase instead of a bulge in one place. Be sure to count the stitches at the end of the row to make sure you now have a total of 113.

What equipment do you need when knitting?

Knitting is done with NEEDLES. They are smooth pointy sticks with a cap on the end to keep the stitches from falling off the back side. Needles also come in double pointed kinds with a point on either end. These are for knitting in the round when you want to make a tube with no seams (like a sock or a turtleneck) You hold the needles one in each hand move them in a specific way that threads a continuous piece of yarn into little interlocking loops. This is how you knit yarn into a usable, wearable fabric.

In addition to Needles, you need basic needlework supplies like scissors, tape measure, ruler, instructions for your pattern, and an iron and ironing board to finish your work neatly. You might want some specific convenience tools that are sold for knitters to make their work faster or easier. Lots of people buy stitch counters, which basically help you keep track of stitches in a pattern so it's easier for you to follow along and keep your place. If you get distracted easily or you have a difficult time following patterns, you might want one.

Point protectors are little rubber caps that look like tiny gnome hats. People buy them to put on the end of their needles when they stop knitting. The point protectors keep the stitches from slipping off when you have tired of knitting for the day but your have not finished the project.

There are tons of other little gadgets that I don't have and don't use but that lots of people seem to like. Before you rush out and buy a bunch of knitting related stuff, ask yourself what areas you have trouble with. Once you know where you need help, you'll know what extra tools might be useful to you. Otherwise you'll have a drawer full of unused knitting gadgets that you find you didn't need to buy.

Best of luck--Jo

What do you call a ball of yarn?

Yarn comes in different "gatherings"--ways that it can be sold. Your question mentioned 2 out of the three: ball of yarn and skein of yarn. The third would be a Hank of yarn.

A hank is a skein of yarn (which is yarn in a large oblong shape, and tied in a few places around the skein to maintain a bit of control over the yarn staying in that loose shape), which has been twisted around itself to make for a smaller and more controllable yarn, which is easier to pack, and store. A hank also is a bit more manageable than a skein of yarn.

A ball of yarn would be wound from a skein or a hank.

How many ounces is 180 gsm for knit fabric?

To calculate the number of ounces in a 180gsm of knit fabric, some english/metric conversions need to be made.

First off, we have an abbreviation: "gsm" which means 'grams per square meter'. I'm going to guess that you are looking for how many ounces would be in that square meter, if it weighed 180 grams.

So, you need to convert grams into ounces. That formula is that there are 28.35grams per ounce. Therefore, divide 180 by 28.35 and you will get an answer of: 5.79 ounces. But that would be 5.79oz per square meter. It might be a better measurement if you had the number of ounces per square yard.

To convert 5.79oz per square meter to an ounces per square yard, we will need to convert square meters to square yards. There are approximately 1.2 square yards in a square meter. Therefore, we will need to multiply 5.79 ounces by 1.2 square yards, to get ounces per square yard. That number will be approximately 6.95.

So, we now find that 180grams per square meter, converts into 6.95 ounces per square yard. or by dividing by square feet (there are 9square feet in a yard), you would have approximately 0.77ounces per square foot of knitted fabric.

How do you make a homemade crochet hook?

To crotchet a circle, you start by crocheting a line and attaching the end of that line to itself to create a small loop. This will be your center ring, and from there you can make the circle bigger by crocheting as you normally would/adding onto the center ring.

How can you tell which needles to use in knitting?

You'll probably be most comfortable using about a size 8 and a smooth worsted weight yarn in a light color. Avoid novelty yarns. Though they are pretty and can make spectacular effects, they make it difficult to see your stitches clearly. If you are by nature a very relaxed person, you might make that a 7, and if learning new things makes you tense up, try a 9 and when you cast on, cast on over both of the needles held together to make extra large starting stitches. Anxious knitters spiral down into a tight frustration because the harder it is to get the needle through the stitch the tighter they hold the yarn and the tighter the next stitch is. So the most important thing to remember when you start to knit is: Breathe. It's supposed to be fun. If it gets frustrating, put it down, do something else, and come back when you are fresh and relaxed.

Can you mix cotton yarn with acrylic yarn in pattern?

This depends on what you are knitting. For most patterns, the answer is Yes, you can use acrylic instead.

However, there are a few cases where it is best to stick to using cotton.

For dishcloths, potholders, or drying towels, it is generally best to use the cotton. Why?

For dishcloths, acrylic will not be quite as soft on the dishes, and acrylic is just weird in water. In this case, though, it would still work, but definitely not as well as the cotton.

For potholders, the reason is very simple: for some acrylic yarns, if it is under high temperatures long enough, it will melt slightly, discoloring it and making it kind of crusty. Some acrylic yarns may be more resistant to heat though, so it may be all right.

For towels, acrylic doesn't seem to absorb water as well as cotton, so this in itself is a reason to use cotton instead. Again, it would still work, but not as well.

For any sort of garment, decoration, bag, pet accessory, etc., it should be perfectly all right.

How do I turn my knitting so that the right side is facing me?

Look at the fabric. One side will be prettier than the other. That's the right side. If you are looking at stockinette knitting, where you knit one side and purl the other side, generally the knit side is the right side. Examine the stitches. On one side the stitches look like the letter "V." On the other, they look like bumps or dashes ("-"). The "V" side is the knit, or right side, and the "-" side is the purl or wrong side.

What is the best washable wool for crocheting blankets?

Best practices dictate that you choose a yarn based on the use of the blanket.

If for a baby, then a yarn that will survive staining and washing. If for pure decoration, then a yarn that will dazzle and reveal the glory of the handwork invested in it.

How many ounces is two-four ounce skeins in 3 different colors?

What is the properties of yarns?

are you asking the uses of combed yarn and what it is?- because in that case it would be cotton blended yarn used for weaving materials: poleyester/cotton

What is crocheting used for?

Crochet, like knitting or weaving, is used to turn yarn into fabric. Crocheted fabrics tend to be less stretchy than knitting and thicker than knitting. They tend to be more stretchy than weaving and more textured than weaving.

Crochet is especially well suited for making afghans, scarves, lacy edgings and doilies, and stuffed animals. However, you can also use crochet to make sweaters, socks, hats, and just about any other sort of fabric item.

How did knitting start?

Early knit textiles were found in Egypt dating back to the 11th century. Knitting made it to Europe somewhere between the 14th and 15th centuries. In 1527, the first trade guild was established in Paris, which was male dominated. With the invention of knitting machines, more women became involved.

What else can you knit with if you do not have needles?

There are many objects that one can find which would suffice as knitting needles. You simply need a pair of long-ish matching stick-like objects with a point-like tip.

Chopsticks are an obvious choice, however, not everyone has a handy pair of chopsticks in their home.

Wooden dowels work well, as long as they are small enough to fit in a pencil sharpener that would serve to make a point at the ends.

Two sticks from the yard could be sanded, then whittled to points.

If you take the ink things out of two pens, that would work, as long as they don't have the small clip used to attach them to a piece of paper.

There are things all over the place if you look hard enough. Be creative!

Pencils do not work, because of the lead point, which would do stuff to the yarn.

Toothpicks do not work either, because they are simply to short, and stitches start falling off all over the place if toothpicks are used.

And don't even think about attempting to use straight pins. It is simply impossible.

How do to do purl 1 into the back of the second yarn over in knitting?

Bring the yarn to the front of the work (the side closest to you). Insert the right needle into the first stitch on the left needle from back to front. Imagine the stitch is a little cowboy sitting on a horse. The tip of the left needle is the horse's nose. The cowboy is facing to your right. Be sure you insert the right needle under the cowboy from the tail of the "horse" toward the horse's nose. Wrap the yarn around the tip of the right needle normally (for most American and European knitters this would be counter clock-wise). Pull the wrap under the left needle and to the back. There is now a brand new purl stitch on the right needle and it is time to drop the old stitch off the left needle.

The link below shows a video clip on how to purl. It's generally much easier to get the hang of if you can watch it demonstrated.

What is the difference between staple yarn and filament yarn including their textures?

Generally, thread is ultra fine fiber that can be passed through a sewing needle eye. To confuse matters, there is a yarn weight called 'thread weight', which is about the same weight as sewing thread.

Otherwise yarn weights are all larger than thread: the diameter of the fiber is larger.

What is yarn mercerizing equipment?

Mercerizing is an advanced stage in the processing of Yarn into fabrics (the final product). It gives the otherwise plain fabric a lustre/shine, and easy dyeability.

How do you change a skein of yarn when you finish the other while knitting?

There are a few ways.

One is, if the yarn is wool, to wet both the old and new ends and weave them together a little bit, and then rub them together very vigorously. The heat and agitation should felt them together. Tug them apart a little to see if it's sturdy before you continue to knit.

If the yarns are the same colour, or you don't mind it looking a bit strange, knit with both yarns together for five or so stitches and then drop the end of the old yarn.

If you want it to look very neat and the colours are different, use a slip knot to tie the two yarns together and knit normally. Later, go back and undo the slip knot and use a large needle to stitch the ends into the work securely and invisibly.
