What was ballet like when it was first invented?

Ballet wasn't "invented." It developed over time as has all art forms. Louis XIV is said to have influenced the consoildation of ballet, and at this time it was a group of men, wearing huge costumes performing for the king and the court. The stories of the ballet would vary, but usually were comments on the political views of the day. This did not always please the king, so more light frilly entertainment was performed. Ballet was also performed on horses, in stadiums, like football is today. The ballet would be performed with riders and horses slowly /quickley 'dancing'. This would have been quite amazing to watch. In Spain dancing horses are still popular, and this is related to ballet. Ballet started out in the 15th century in France. It wasn't really anything like ballet is today. It was more like ballroom dancing in heavy, clunky costumes and shoes. Over time, it evolved into something more gymnastic and acrobatic like it is today. Women were forbidden to dance it, really. But the whole structure of ballet has changed from top to bottom. The clothing has become much lighter and revealing and the steps and movements are much more freeing.

Is dancing an instinct or a learned behavior?

It must be an instinct, since even babies react to rhythm. More recent developments in human history must have lead to more sophisticated forms of dance. But dance can also be inner, which I think is important to explain why many people don't dance. The point is that dance doesn't have to be to rock or other types of popular, immediate gratification but to any musical pattern. It follows that the person is "listening" internally and therefore dancing, while apparently staying immobile. The subject interests me very much, as I happen to be writing on the origins of music.

What do you call a boy ballet dancer?

A young male dancer, is nowdays known as just that ' A Dancer'.The formal name is 'DANSEUR' but it is really a bit over the top for everyday use. The only thing to REALLY remember is NOT to call a male dancer a BALLERINA. This name not only is incorrect, it creates the wrong perception of the male dancer. That is soft, girly and fairy like. Male dancers are actually nothing of the sort, irrespective of their sexual preference.

According to Wikipedia and The Free Dictionary the proper name for a male ballet dancer is "danseur".

You can also refer to a male ballet dancer as a "Balleroux" (Prenounced bah-leh-ROO)

There are several terms--"danseur," "ballerino," "male ballet dancer." Or just "dancer." I know an especially popular and fitting one--"brave."
