Database Programming

Databases are collections of tables that maintain and display information, often collaboratively; this information can be used for interaction with an application or gaining general knowledge. Questions about database engines and modifying or using them belong in this category.

What does each column in a database represent?

Each column in a database table represents an attribute reg. the data that is held in that table. For ex:

Table Employee can contain employee number, name, age, date of joining etc. Each of these items would be stored as individual columns in the Employee table.

Why create view in database?

A View is similar to a Table and can be mistaken for a table by a novice application developer.

CREATE VIEW VIEW_NAME AS SQL QUERY

Here the SQL Query includes the Select query on a table that is to be displayed as a View.

The view is a read only structure that only displays contents from a table and the user cannot insert or update or delete any data in the underlying table.

Views are generally created to impose access restrictions to a specific subset of users whom you do not want to give full access but at the same time want them to view the data.

  9. Creates a competitive advantage over competition
  10. Reveals new approaches to thinking about the problem space
  11. Helps automate managerial processes

What are the Problems of traditional file processing?

  1. Program-Data Dependence. File descriptions are stored within each application program that accesses a given file.
  2. Duplication of Data. Applications are developed independently in file processing systems leading to unplanned duplicate files. Duplication is wasteful as it requires additional storage space and changes in one file must be made manually in all files. This also results in loss of data integrity. It is also possible that the same data item may have different names in different files, or the same name may be used for different data items in different files.
  3. Limited data sharing. Each application has its own private files with little opportunity to share data outside their own applications. A requested report may require data from several incompatible files in separate systems.
  4. Lengthy Development Times. There is little opportunity to leverage previous development efforts. Each new application requires the developer to start from scratch by designing new file formats and descriptions
  5. Excessive Program Maintenance. The preceding factors create a heavy program maintenance load.
  6. Integrity Problem. The problem of integrity is the problem of ensuring that the data in the database is accentuate.

What does a Database management system contain?

A DBMS contains a set of Schemas, tables and views that are used to stored/organize user information logically. The user has options to view, insert, update and delete the data present in the tables.

  • DBMS

What are the marketing entities?

Ten Marketing Entities

Ten types of entities have been identified which may be marketed in the market such as, goods, services, events, experiences, persons, places, properties, organizations, information, and ideas.

Goods: Physical goods that may be manufactured, produced in farms or mined. These account for the bulk of the marketing efforts in most of the countries.

Services: These are intangible products that involve performing some service for the customers. This may be service performed on the customer, like a haircut, on customer's possessions, like servicing of car, or for the customer, like screening of a movie. Services account the maximum marketing effort after products in most of the countries. In many developed countries the volume of services has exceeded that of goods.

Events: Time based shows such as new year celebration, or a sporting event.

Experiences: Experiences which results from a combination of products and services. The customer is interested in the total experience such as an organized holiday tour package rather than the individual products and services included in the package.

Persons: Like marketing of a celebrity or of a candidate in a public election.

Places: Like cities, state, nations, for purposes such as attracting tourists and investment.

Properties: This could be physical properties like real estate or intangible rights in properties.

Organizations: This basically refers to building positive image of organizations, such as companies, universities, and charitable organizations.

Information: Books are the traditional means of selling information, but there are many other type of information marketed. For example market intelligence, economic analysis and mailing lists.

Ideas: Every market offering includes a basic idea. In addition ideas may be marketed by themselves. For examples, some religious bodies try to promote their ideas of what constitutes the right behavior.

Briefly but precisely explain the difference between single-valued attributes and simple attributes Give an example of each?

A single-valued attribute is one that can have only one value. For example, a person has only one first name and only one social security number. A simple attribute is one that cannot be decomposed into its component pieces. For example, a person's sex is classified as either M or F and there is no reasonable way to decompose M or F. Similarly, a person's first name cannot be decomposed into meaningful components. (In contrast, if a phone number includes the area code, it can be decomposed into the area code and the phone number itself. And a person's name may be decomposed into a first name, an initial, and a last name.)

Single-valued attributes are not necessarily simple. For example, an inventory code HWPRIJ23145 may refer to a classification scheme in which HW indicates HardWare, PR indicates Printer, IJ indicates InkJet, and 23145 indicates an inventory control number. Therefore, HWPRIJ23145 may be decomposed into its component parts... even though it is single-valued. To facilitate product tracking, manufacturing serial codes must be single-valued, but they may not be simple. For instance, the product serial number TNP5S2M231109154321 might be decomposed this way:

TN = state = Tennessee

P5 = plant number 5

S2 = shift 2

M23 = machine 23

11 = month, i.e., November

09 = day

154321 = time on a 24-hour clock, i.e., 15:43:21, or 3:43 p.m. plus 21 seconds

Advantage and disadvantage of India education system?

Accessibility to education is one of the main advantages to present day education.In the past education was only for the wealthy.The poor were not given an opportunity to improve their lot in life.Females were also denied an education by virtue of the "fact" they would get married and so an education would be "wasted" on females.As North America was settled children were pulled from schools during the harvesting season or as needed ,to work the farm.Summers off were no vacation period for students, it was a time to help with farm work instead of hiring farm hands.Children in most, if not all developing countries have mandatory education for all children, regardless of their abilities .In the past children with special needs were hidden away and forgotten.Society ,in general tries to encourage developing nations to provide even basic education for its people.Modern society recognizes the importance of education.Today we realize that an education translates into opportunity and hope for the future.The ability to get an education, to foster creativity and curiosity, to seek answers will allow mankind to continue to grow. Today we try to encourage all children to reach for their fullest potential.Teachers are better qualified.No longer can a child , barely in their teens, become a teacher.The one room classroom is fortunately a thing of the past.The computor, libraries and ready access to information have all contributed to the ability to learn outside of the traditional classroom.On line and distance education have changed the face of what a classroom is.I'm glad that I was born when I was and am thankful my children and grandchildren will have more opportunities in life due to the fact they are able to get a good education.
