Deafness and Hearing Loss

Deaf or hearing impaired people have either complete or partial hearing loss. These people often require the use of hearing aids or sign language to hear and communicate. Hard of hearing people are those who suffer from a form of partial hearing loss usually caused by aging or trauma.

555 Questions

Can they make a hearing device or a new kind of ear or something that allows you to switch from being able to hear above or below whatever frequencies you can hear already?

I don't know the principle of operation, but years ago in "Popular Electronics" magazine, there was a construction article for a device that would allow you to hear super-sonic sounds like dog whistles, the sounds that insects make, etc. I think it mixed and shifted frequencies kinda like a super-heterodyne radio receiver does with RF. Like you, I'd like to have such a device. On the other hand, if a device picked up sub-sonic sounds, it would probably just pick up those "boom trucks" that all the young people drive, and in my opinion we can already hear those things from far enough away (about a mile).

Supporting ideaIndustry uses this equipment. A link is provided, but only as an example of the stuff being considered. No opinion, pro or con, is stated or implied. It's just a window to look through. Note: the stuff is kinda pricey for non-professional acquisition. Hit the www and see what else is out there.

Ed Sheeran - Surprises fans by making a video for the deaf. You can still hear the voice but in the video he is standing doing sign language. Watch it, its cool. Its called 'You need me i dont need you'.

There are many singers who have hearing impairments/deafness, and they sing just like everyone else.

What dB hearing needs a hearing aid?

Various dB losses require a hearing aid. The question isn't so much what decibel loss requires a hearing aid, but at what point does your hearing interfere with your life enough that a hearing aid would prove beneficial.

Because people are different, hearing aid manufacturers intentionally design an array of hearing aids suited to mild (least-affected grade of hearing loss) loss to severe. Additionally, different models of hearing aids may effect when you might wish to purchase a hearing aid. For example, original hearing aids were analog, so they were made with a specific hearing loss in mind. If your hearing changed past a reasonable range covered by your hearing aid, it might have been necessary to purchase a new one. Now, analog programmable hearing aids are adjustable, and can be programmed by an audiologist to suit your fluctuating hearing loss. Finally, and most expensively (also: what I wear) are digital programmable hearing aids. My audiologist is able to test my aided and un-aided hearing, compare it to my hearing aid programs (plugged into the computer) and change my hearing aid levels very quickly. As someone with a permanent progressive loss, this type of hearing aid is helpful because my hearing aid adjusts as my hearing does.

In general, it is advisable to get a hearing aid if you have trouble hearing, if your hearing loss is affecting your relationships with others, if your safety is affected while driving, working, or at home, or if you are unable to adjust to a more physical form of communication (cued speech, American/British Sign Language, SEE, Simultaneous Communication, lip-reading, etc.).

As far as hearing levels go, a minimum loss is 26-45 decibels, and your purchase of a hearing aid truly depends on the above questions as to whether or not it will be beneficial.

If you believe you have a hearing loss, please consult an Ear/Nose/Throat specialist to rule out any other possibilities besides a permanent hearing loss. After that, take their advice regarding seeking out an audiology specialist to assist you in choosing which particular device would be most beneficial to you!

You have been to a performance of a deaf person and most of the audience was deaf They did not clap you are trying to remember what they did to applaud How would they applaud?

You may have seen the 'deaf clap' in action. A deaf clap looks a bit like this. Hold your hands up (approximately level with your ears) about twelve inches apart with your palms facing each other and shake your hands back and forth (think 'jazz hands.')

What are hearing aid procedures and policy?

You should undergo a complete hearing evaluation by a licensed Audiologist first. You need to find out if the problem is medical which would rule out the need for a hearing aid. It might even be just ear wax. Once you have been identified as a candidate for hearing instruments, you should look for a provider who matches your personality and is qualified/experienced in a variety of instruments and manufacturers. Each manufacturer has its own software development formulae - kind of like apples and oranges - you should have a choice because what works for one loss might not work for another. During the course of your evaluation, the Audiologist will look in your ears to determine the size, shape and direction of your ear canal, will make sure there is no debris (to include wax or obstruction) in the ear canal and will complete a hearing test (to include word recognition scores to see how your ears manage the sound once amplified appropriately). Word recognition scores that are very low do not point to hearing aid benefit. Once the evaluation is completed an Audiologist will talk to you about your options, the features of the different levels of technology and how those features will impact your individual lifestyle needs. The style of the instruments will be chosen and if the instruments are in stock, you may be fit that day if it is an open style product. A trial period is mandated for first time purchasers of a hearing aid by the FDA....you may be charged for this although many providers are now offering limited trials at no charge.

How many decibels is an average mother's voice when yelling at her kids to do their homework?

Screaming or yelling is usually about 90 decibels, which is an unpleasant level to hear, but the human voice *can* go up to 120 decibels.

Sound usually starts causing pain at around 140 decibels.

As a hilarious side note, in the UK you are required to wear hearing protection if you are in an environment where there is sound above 80 decibels on a daily basis. So, you might either want to get earplugs, OR start doing your homework.

Who was the deaf president?

Ronald Reagan was deaf , or almost deaf, in one ear due to an accident when he was making a movie. He wore a hearing aid which, according to stories, he wouild turn off on occasion during boring meetings. I think he was the nearest to deaf US president ever,

What is the meaning of adventitiously deaf?

Adventitious deafness

->A person who becomes deaf

->can be caused by accidents (as when I King Jordan, the first deaf president of Gallaudet University, was hurled off his motorcycle), bomb blasts, injuries (e.g., punctured eardrums) extreme chill, high fever, viral infections such as mumps, meningitis, and encephalitis, diseases such as neurofibraomatiosis-2 (tumors that attack the auditory nerves). And reactions to certain (ototoxic) drugs .

How do you communicate with a patient that is hard of hearing?

It depends on the degree of their hearing loss. Some patients who are hard of hearing may have been taught to lip-read. Others may have been taught to use sign language. And others may prefer to communicate by writing notes, or even by using a computer. First assess the degree of hearing loss, and find out what the patient's preferred method of communication is. For those who can lip read, making eye contact and speaking clearly will be important. For those who only have mild hearing loss but still maintain some hearing and/or use a hearing aid, they may ask you to speak a little louder when talking to them. In other words, there is no "one size fits all" response, so assess the patient and then use the techniques that are most suitable for that person.

Were Alexander Graham Bell's daughter and wife deaf?

Bell had two daughters, but neither suffered from deafness. His wife Mabel was profoundly deaf, however, and Bell's mother had also been deaf-- one reason that motivated him in his work to develop a hearing aid that would restore some hearing to those who had lost it.

Is profound deafness curable?

There is no "cure" for deafness. There are ways for a deaf person to hear again though. There is now a Cochlear Implant which is a surgery performed that relays sound from the mic on the implant directly to the brain rather than going through the damaged cochlea.

How do you you become deaf?

You can be born deaf, have childhood diseases/illnesses, or fevers that are too high. I'm still young, not out of school, and I'm going deaf. My friends get annoyed because i can't hear them all the time.! it's so annoying! and as i get older, my doc said it might get worse, but my family can't afford surgery, so i might just go deaf. :(
they become deaf in may diffrent ways it could happen in a illnes

At what age do people become deaf?

People can become deaf at any age, age is not a deciding factor

Permanent hearing loss can occur when one is exposed to what?

Hearing loss by noise exposure occurs when the cochlea or Inner Ear is exposed to excessive noise levels that can cause temporary or permanent damage to ones hearing.

We use a baseline that sound levels over 85dB will cause hearing loss and that hearing protection is manatory when exposed. Cell phones, televisions, personal entertianment devices, lawn mowers, power tools, sports or entertainment forums all can easly cause hearing loss. Everyday sounds you find outside can also cause hearing loss and we call that noise pollution. Noise exposure will be the leading cause of hearing loss in people aged between 20 - 60 years old.

Noise levels that cause hearing loss can be long term or short term and is determined by the intensity of decible range (loudness)and frequency versus time exposure to that sound.

Best described it is your exposure time against the intesity of the volume levels. You can be exposed to low levels over longer periods and shorter period with more intense levels.

Very much like being exposed to radiation. We can all be exposed to radition with temporary or little effect or be very harmed by it. Long term exposure to low doses or short term doses at high levels can extremely harmful. So the longer you are exposed to intense sound the more likely you will get hearing loss and most likely permanent loss. It may take 1 second as a jet fighter takes off or 20 years listening to traffic you can have noise induced hearing loss. Anyone that has been to a rock concert can remember the "amplifer hum" after the concert and feeling deafened, that was hearing loss due to noise exposure. Hopefully your hearing came back but it was a signed that you damaged your hearing and may come back later like exposure to the sun to haunt you.

We have determine that noise levels measures at 85dB or greater can cause hearing loss. We us a sound level meter to measure or weight noise by peak levels or long term levels by intensity and also by frequency. We can determine if the sound levels are dangerouse and recommeded protection. The human part effected is the hearing nerves that cannot be replaced, so most noise induced hearing loss is permanent. How can we determine noise exposure has caused a hearing loss? Ususally , client history current and if possible past hearing tests . There is in most cases a distinct shape of hearing loss in tested frequencys that can effect one ear or both ears and previous hearing tests are available we can see if and what changes have occured.

What can you do about it? Not much except possible use of a hearing aid to help with the hearing loss and protection what hearing is left. There is little medically at this time that can be done as far as repairing the damage.

So allways use hearing protection, turn down your IPOD and cell phone and just be lucky you are not driving in the car that you can hear playing music a mile away. There is available. There is enough available hearing protection the can be specific for your hearing needs and uses so use them.

What is the Deaf population in the British isles?

There are about 9 million deaf or hard of hearing people in the UK

Why do you hear an echo if you wear hearing aid not having a problem in your ear?

You may hear an echo with a hearing aid due to sound feedback, which occurs when amplified sound from the hearing aid speaker leaks back into the microphone. This can happen if the hearing aid doesn't fit properly or if there's a gap that allows sound to escape. Additionally, certain settings or environments can exacerbate this effect, making the echo more noticeable. Proper adjustment and fitting of the hearing aid can help minimize this issue.
