What are some major events between 1930 and 1939?
I'm not too great with history, but looking at the quality of some of the answers here, I'll give you everything I know.
The economic times were in the gutter. The lull of false prosperity in the 1920s meant that everyone were buying like crazy, and were also buying into the stock market. The problem with that was because they were buying on margin, not paying all of the stock and were supposed to pay the rest later. However, when news began to circulate that they should sell stocks, they all sold their stocks on "black Tuesday", and many were desolate and bankrupt.
Farmers were beyond broke. They couldn't afford to buy the new machines that were being used to collect their crops, and the price of wheat was plummeting. This meant that the farmers quite literally, burned their wheat because it would cost too much money to collect.
Racism began to arrise once more, as people were blaming immigrants for stealing their jobs. This is when the popularity of the "KKK", Ku Klux Klan" was created. Even public newspapers sometimes encouraged the group, blaming immigrants for the prolems.
The 1930s was also a time for the rise of political dictators, which includes Hitler. Unpopular at first, the people began to believe these dictators, who claimed that by using force, they could quickly and efficiently take the country out of a recession. The moment Hitler was put into power in Germany, he had built many factories for military purposes, which increased job demands, which meant less were unemployed. The people were blinded by this sudden amount of new jobs, and thought that Hitler could really help them. Unfortunately, because of all of these dictators taking advantage of the economic disaster, it leads us to world war 2 in 1939

What were living conditions like for white Americans in the 1930's?
Well, Nobody had very much money. In the Depression years, If your father had a job, you had a good family. We considered ourselves a "good" family, but we were land poor. We owned a great deal of land but it wasn't bringing in any income in the thirties. There was just no cash flow. On the other hand, there was not much tax on land. I think "good" families were differentiated by a certain accent, too. It was the way people talked. It was the pronunciation of "I." Didn't say "niiice" and "whiiite," dragging the "I" sound out. That's true. Yes, I think so. My father was of the old school. integrity was the byword. They looked down very much on those who cheated and stole, especially from the poor. And I remember him talking about one well-off family who did just that and became very prominent later. It was an attitude. You never cheated anybody, and especially anybody lesser than you. And you never said a cross word or spoke badly to someone who couldn't speak back to you. My husband always said it was the Civil War. They just went back to the dirt. And they had fought in the Civil War even though they never owned slaves. Many of these men died in the Civil War. There were lots of widows left with absolutely nothing except a houseful of children to rear. And do you know it was the blacks who took care of these poor white families. They cut wood for them and shared with them and looked in on them. I had experience with another class of poor white people in the thirties in that we lived so close to the railroad station. I remember seeing the bums coming up the street from the railroad station. And I remember seeing our backyard filled with these poor men, eating what my grandmother had given them. They never asked for a handout. They would only ask for work - if they could chop wood, for example.

Did they use horse and carts in the 1930's?
Although Ford had been cranking out automobiles for decades, the horse and wagon/buggy was still used throughout the 1930's. We take for granted the luxury of modern cars and the vast majority of American families have at least two per household, but before WWII the car was still a plaything of the wealthy. During both world wars gas and rubber were in short supply, making car ownership less available for people with smaller incomes. Finally, with the returning soldiers in 1945 and the onset of the babyboom and America's prosperity of the 1950's, the horse was replaced at a much faster rate. Family businesses did not replace the old horse when it died, but found it the perfect opportunity to update to a car or truck.
What many people do not realize is that today there are more horses in America than any other time in it's history. It's true we not longer rely on them for transportation, but man and horse have been partners for thousands of years and it is clear we choose to keep them in our lives.

The Supermarket (1930s and 1940s):
As early at the 1920s, some chain grocers were experimenting with consolidated (albeit still rather small) stores that featured at least a small selection of fresh meats and produce along with the dry grocery items. In Southern California, Ralphs Grocery Company was expanding into much larger stores than had been seen before in most of the country. Los Angeles was also seeing the beginning of the "drive-in market" phenomenon, where several complimentary food retailers (a butcher, a baker, a grocer, and a produce vendor, for example) would locate within the same small shopping center surrounding a parking lot. These centers were often perceived by customers as a single entity, despite being under separate ownership.

How much was candy in the 1930's?
In the early 1960's, I remember candy bars to be priced at 5 cents. Prices of everything from that time seem to be so ridiculously low compared to now - movies .35, bread .15, comics .10, newspapers .05, etc. For a quarter, I could go to the corner store and buy: a 6-oz bottle of coke, a small bag of potato chips, a Devil Dog (an east cost cake treat made by Drake's), a large dill pickle and two pretzel sticks - all for .25!!! Of course, wages matched the cost; my father worked in a grocery store and when he left in 1968 after many years, his salary was $500.00 a month.

Who ran soup kitchens in the 1930s?

Some Trivia
Did you know that Al Capone (yes the gangster) started the Chicago soup kitchen's. He did not start them to "get the public on his side." He was sincere, he saw that the public had a need, and he wanted to help, because financially, he could.
While Al Capone did indeed feed many of the poor there was always a method to his madness and while he gained popularity and trust from the unemployed he also started Unions which gave work to many of the men in need, yet collected large sums of money which were often used in under-handed dealings. (Jimmy Hoffa) started out well, but soon got caught up in the mob. To this day they don't know where his body is located and never will find it.
