Throughout the 1950s, young women's clothing was also influenced by the rock 'n' roll craze. Full skirts in bright colors become popular for dancing and skirts and pants were pinched in at the waist to emphasis the waist and bust. Young women also wore tight-fitting blouses tucked into slim-line calf-length trousers called 'Capri' pants or 'pedal pushers'. Short ankle socks, scarves tied around the neck and cropped cardigans were also popular.

Movie star fashion influenced the clothing styles of ladies in the 1950s. Screen goddesses like Marilyn Monroe and Grace Kelly inspired tiny waistlines and full skirts and busts. Slim pencil-line skirts were also popular. Stiletto-heeled shoes emerged in the early 1950s and shoes could be bought in a variety of colours to match any outfit.

Change is structure of the economy- job growth has occurred among women and the older workers in the service sector of the economy, while union strength has traditionally been among urban blue collar workers, especially middle-aged workers.

Management efforts to control costs-unionized workers receive higher pay than their nonunionized counterparts, and the pressure is greater because of international competition.

Human Resource practices- competition for scarce human resources can lead employers to offer much of what employees traditionally sought through union membership.

Government regulation- stricter regulation in such areas as workplace safety and equal employment opportunity leaves fewer areas in which unions can show an advantage over what employers must already offer.

A huge influence was the end of the rationing and restrictions required during World War II. Silks and nylon were no longer needed for parachutes. A woman's dress wasn't limited to just 2-3 yards of fabric. Rubber could be used again for girdles. As a result, fasion designers reveled in creating fashion that looked completely different from the 1940s silhouette - most famously, Christian Dior's "New Look" with narrow waists and huge skirt using as much as 30 yards of fabric for just one skirt.

Another big influence was the new atomic age with prints using space age shapes.

Hawaiiana became more mainstream in the US, probably because so many of our soldiers passed through there on their way to or from the Eastern front.
