This is a very good question. That has happened many times with me. They tried to diagnose me with depression but i knew i wasn't always depressed and i told them that i was super happy a few days before. So make sure that you speak up to the psychiatrist. A parent or something can also explain what they have observed since they most likely see them daily, or if the person is not living with a parent then someone who sees them often enough to see the dramatic mood swings should talk. It is good to have a another person besides the patient to give input to what he/she sees. The person that is suspected of having bipolar disorder know her/him self the best and how she/he feels, so that person should really speak up and be honest with the psychiatrist and with themself.

Why do depressed teens resort to violence?
Because where angry, sad, miserable, confused, depressed ALL AT THE same time . we need a realease and if we cant get across our point/how we feel. we get more angry which can result in violence, agresion.
Depressed or teens having any mental disorder are more likely to do violent activities. Even teens who join gangs, abuse drugs/alcohol or rebellious are found in doing such acts. The depressed teens become fed up with their life, they are sad, alone and become aggressive in their behaviors. I read a very sad news on a blog quoted"Just recently, CNN reported a heart-breaking news about a Berkeley teen who was convicted in the murder of his father. The victim was raising three kids on his own when one of them, for reasons unknown, murdered him with a gunshot to the head. The judge handling the case found the 16-year-old teen guilty of first-degree murder with an enhancement for using a gun in the death of his 40-year-old father."
This is so sad, and we can assume that this act is beyond violence.

How do I find out if im depressed?
The best advice I can give you is to seek help from a professional. Although we are all aware of our different moods, i.e. happy, sad, etc. depression is something that needs to be diagnosed and treated, either with psychotherapy or medication depending on what the therapist decides the cause of your depression is. They will look for certain signs or symptoms of depression such as severe sadness, a feeling of hopelessness or hopelessness, sleep disturbances, eating disturbances, an inability to gain pleasure from things that used to make you happy or even suicidal thoughts. If you feel as though these symptoms closely resemble how you're feeling then depression might be the cause.
