Look at the cities of Phoenix, Tucson, El Paso, and Las Vegas for example. While much of the country is having problems with bitter cold, snow and ice in the winter, we poor desert-loving souls just smile.

In addition, job opportunities are not often found in desert environments. Often, people may live in a desert type environment (think parts of Arizona) but that area is often close to a non-desert environment and has sustainable resources such as food and water that can supply those living in the area.
