The Dish and DirecTV receivers call into their system once a week. Not too sure why, maybe to report on your movie purchase history (if any) and maybe updates of the system or the online program schedule.

Yes, you can as long as he OWNS it and did NOT lease it. There is a ID number on the back of the box. You have to call Direct TV and see if it was owned or leased. If it was leased that means the box really belongs to Direct TV. If they determine that he owned the receiver box you will have to buy a NEW CARD from them but the box will be yours. They WILL not and I mean WILL not let you use his or anyone's card. The card is 20.00 and you have no choice believe me, I just went through this. For some reason, even if you own the box they do charge a 4.95 monthly fee and when it is listed on your bill it will say lease price. I don't know why because I own my box but they will charge you that fee to use it. Hope this helps... Good luck, Anne

Codes are remote control specific. Use your remote control manual (or your cable company guide) to find the code for your brand tv. If there is no code for your tv alot of times another manufacturer's code will work. You just have to be patient and try all the codes. For example, my COBY TFD1973 TV/DVD combo code is 248 the same as Audiovox.

You could hypothetically do that but it would require purchasing some expensive equipment and the setup would be somewhat complicated. In addition, you need a satellite receiver set top box to receive the satellite signal. You cannot use your computer as a satellite receiver. The easiest way to accomplish what you want is to buy a TV tuner card, tune the tuner card to channel 3 or 4, then attach the satellite receiver to the tuner card. Or you can purchase a video card that has RCA inputs and hook up the satellite receiver that way. You can convert your PC to a TV, but you cannot convert it into a satellite receiver. And last but not least, and even easier, you can purchase software for 50 bucks that will allow you to tune into hundreds of satellite tv channels vis the internet. Direct TV does not have a sleep timer unfortunately. Therefore I use my TV's sleep timer and the box stays on pretty much all the time. I have me Ed had any complication with the box always being on. Sometimes if I remember I turn it off in the morning on my way to school and/or work.
