Dog Behavior

Dogs are unable to talk just like we do, but we can still understand their feelings by observing their behavior and body language. What does it mean when a pregnant girl dog slides her butt across the floor?

Less likely to do with pregnancy, more likely trying to 'itch' the anal glands.

Dogs have anal glands on either side of the sphincter that produce a (usually) foul smelling liquid. These glands are similar to those of a skunk. Usually when a dog makes a bowel movement, as they clinch their sphincter muscle the tightness of the muscle will cause the glands to excrete some of the fluid. When they aren't draining as well as they could, it causes dogs to try to "itch" back there, and that's when they do the "boot-scoot" (butt scooting)

When you take your girl to the vet for a checkup, ask them to "express her anal glands". If they become infected or impacted, it can lead to an expensive surgery and is something so easily done, some people do it themselves (rubber gloves needed) rather than pay a vet 10 bucks or more.

Would you offer a submissive pup to a family with boisterous children?

What makes dogs bark?

There are many reasons that a dog may bark; - a dog may be barking at an unfamiliar object or sound - an aggresive dog may be barking at a human - a dog may bark at its toy etc..
Your dog will only bark when they see another person or a dog. He recognizes only you and barks to scare away the other people/dogs. You are the dog's "guardian," so it barks at other people because they want to protect you. In other words, if you love your dog, the dog loves you back by protecting you.

What do dogs look for in a spot to poop?

If dogs urinate while you are out on a walk in the neighborhood, they are "catching up on their correspondence". Marking (with urine) is how dogs "communicate" to other dogs in the area, since they all tend to choose the same places to urinate. A dog marking a public place with urine is it's way of "dropping it's business card" on a community "desktop" for other dogs to read. Now, in your own backyard, it could be because he can smell that he's used that area before, or just becasue that seems like a good spot to him.

More on the development and domestication of dogs:

Our dogs descended/evolved from the Grey Wolf(canis lupus) . They evolved both naturally and with human intervention.

Our paths crossed many times in early days. They would have sat near our campfires after a fresh kill, we would probably have seen them in the action of the hunt and they would have also seen us hunting.

There is a theory that most likely a human hunting group came upon a wolf cub and wanted to take it with them. The hunters may have raised it and realized the benefits of having the companionship and assistance of the wolf when hunting. A group of wolves could have helped lead man to prey.

So they would have crossbred naturally by survival of the fittest, then they were purposefully bred for characteristics that were helpful to man and to eliminate characteristics that were undesired. As this process was done over and over again, the dogs became more and more socialized, domesticated, and refined to the qualities that were desirable. This led to more human intervention in breeding along with survival of the fittest to shape the animals .

The wolves evolving into domesticated animals would have reflected traits from the interaction and co-dependence with the human group. Things like length of fur adapting to the weather their human family lived in, perhaps speed and stealth for hunting, swimming for water retrieval/crossing, all types of certain behaviors and physical traits and appearances were evolved into these animals and unique in the dogs within each human group.

Sometimes human groups would trade and breed different dogs for certain traits they wanted and the eventual outcome would be different types (breeds) of dogs.
