Well what ever the previous poster is absolutely right, you should not leave a brand new puppy alone for more than 5 hours even...I don't leave my dogs for more than 4 hours a day sometimes less...
It is almost cruel to the puppy, he or she needs attention, training and something to keep her preoccupied with more than just toys, treats, food and water....Will you be able to provide the needed attention?
Also dogs need to be walked 1-2 x a day so it prevents separation anxiety which leads to bad habits, which you cannot correct if you aren't there to solve the problem when it happens...Will you be able to walk him/her everyday?
And puppies need to be fed 3 x a day until they are about 4-5 months old, until you can feed them 2 x a day in the morning and at night...Will you be able to keep up with feeding correct proportions of food to prevent bloating or over eating, which can lead to obesity? because puppies usually don't know when to stop eating, they need to be taught.
Puppies need to be taken outside numerous times a day until their bladders are large enough to "hold it" long enough. Puppies usually have to go after naps, eating, and playtime... Will you be able to take them out every single time they do each one of these activities?
If you are desparate to have a dog at least make sure you have enough money for a dog sitter to come to your house to take care of him/her....
But I don't suggest that at all unless it's every once in a while when you really need a dog-sitter otherwise your dog will only develop affection or a bond with the dog-sitter and probably only see you for what??? the 14 hours you are home and you probably spend 1/2 of that time sleeping.
DON'T GET IT and there is NO SUCH THING AS A TOY LAB. IF YOU ARE GONE FOR A Longe time don't get a puppy OR a dog since you are away 10 hours weekday!

You could either have someone come and let the puppy outside during your work day, take the dog to a sitter every day, or if you have a yard, fence in an area and put a dog house in it. You could then leave the pup outside while you are gone.
Crate training while you are at home is the easiest way of potty training a pup.
