Why will your dog die if it eats garlic?

Garlic as well as other plants in the same family (onions, chives, leeks) can be toxic to both dogs and cats. Many pet owners realize that onions are toxic to dogs and cats, but few are aware that garlic is even more toxic (up to five times more!). The symptoms and effects depend upon how much has been ingested as well as the sensitivity of the pet to the plant material.

What exactly does garlic do to the pet? Garlic and onions both result in damage to the red blood cells, causing them to be likely to rupture (oxidation) with a resultant anemia developing. As red blood cells carry oxygen, the reduction in their number caused by the rupture produced by the toxicosis leads to some serious clinical signs, which may even result in death (in my thirty plus years as a veterinarian I have never seen a pet die from this, but the risk is real and dependant upon the amount ingested). Symptoms of the anemia include weakness and lethargy due to the low red blood cell count with reduced oxygen carrying capacity. The gums will also be pale and is an obvious visible sign of the anemia. Due to the low level of oxygen the pet will have an increased respiratory rate, labored breathing, and unable to tolerate exercise. Symptoms may take a few days to develop but if severe anemia does occur, the pet could collapse and possibly die.

In addition to the rupture of the red blood cells, ingestion of garlic/onion can lead to irritation of the digestive tract producing gastroenteritis. Symptoms of gastroenteritis may include oral irritation, drooling, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.

The severity of the symptoms depend upon the amount ingested and typically if a small amount is taken in the risk for toxicosis is rare. But if the pet is especially sensitive to garlic/onions, even a small amount could produce symptoms of toxicosis.

If your pet would ingest garlic/onion, the best course of action would be to contact your veterinarian. In addition, you should be vigilant for the development of any of the aforementioned symptoms. The toxicosis can be treated successfully, but if ignored could lead to serious complications.

Where can I find information on how to remove a dog's surgical staples when needed?

Ideally you wouldn't remove the staples yourself - the veterinarian or vet tech would do this. The visit is pretty cheap, but this way the vet gets to take a look at the surgical site and make sure everything healed up like it was supposed to.

Which part of a dog's body sweats?

Dogs lose body heat through the pads of their feet and noses. Dogs don't sweat like humans sweat. Instead, dogs regulate their body heat through panting. Panting pulls cool air over the tongue and lungs.

How many puppies can a 5 year old dog have?

Assuming the dog has not had puppies before, if she has one litter of puppies every year from now up to and including her eighth year, for a total of four litters, and we assume a litter number of 5-6, then she can have approximately 20 to 24 puppies during that time. Very small dogs may have only one or two pups per litter, and larger dogs may have larger litters of 10 or more, but one cannot reliably predict litter number or viability. For her own health, your bitch should not be bred more than once a year, and should probably not be bred past age 8. In fact, two to three litters over a four-year period would be preferable.

Disreputable breeders will breed bitches twice a year for many years until they are physically unable to give birth to viable litters. This is widely considered to be inhumane, unacceptable behavior.

If you do breed your bitch, remember that she should have two to three times her normal ration of food when she is pregnant or nursing, and her food should be of the highest quality. Check with your vet for the correct amount and a recommendation on the best brand.

How long does a dog bleed during her heat time?

Virtually all breeds have two oestrus cycles each year. Initially, the vulva swells and within a day there is a clear discharge, which becomes tinged with blood the next day. This discharge increases in intensity and then slowly diminishes, ending after about ten days. During this time the female becomes more alert and urinates frequently, leaving signals of her impending willingness to mate. Ovulation takes place soon after the discharge has stopped. Only now will the female accept mating. Hormonal changes occur regardless of whether a female is pregnant, which is why there is no simple blood or urine tests to confirm impending motherhood.

Do giant schnauzer dogs shed hair?

No, schnauzers do not shed. They need to be groomed regularly however - because they don't lose their hair, they need to be trimmed to keep them looking neat & tidy! If their hair is not trimmed, it will simply continue to grow. Schnauzers make great indoor dogs because they won't leave hair around your house, but remember, because they don't shed like some other dogs, they don't lose their dirty & soiled hair. As a result, they will need to be bathed in order to keep them smelling fresh! Do not bathe them frequently, just about once a month.

2 week puppy is constipated?

At this age, the puppy should still be with the mother who will lick the puppy in order to make it go to the bathroom. If the mother is no longer around (which I assume you are bottle feeding if not) you can gently rub the puppy's stomach and back to help move the food down through their digestive system. At this point, their bodies are not strong enough to do so. If the puppy has been constipated for a while you should seek vet assistance.

Also...The puppy might be wormy, making it harder for it to "go." Most de-wormer medications recommend the first dose be given at two weeks of age.

Can a spayed male dog still get a female pregnant?

Speaking as someone with a neutered male dog who has recently decided that he and my spayed female dog should be...er...more than friends...boys will be boys.

If there are male dogs around with easy access (kept in the same fenced in yard or house), they're going to know she's a female and get a hankering to "show their affection" once in a while. If she's not in heat, though, which she won't be if she's spayed, she won't be attracting random strays from the neighborhood.

Do dogs get ear wax in their ears?

Normally, no. Dogs do produce ear wax (cerumen), but it is normally cleared out on a regular basis. However, some dogs do develop ear wax plugs, which can predispose them to developing recurrent ear infections. If your veterinarian finds this, he/she can teach you how to monitor your dog's ears for wax buildup and how to clean it out safely.

How can you tell if your dog hurt his head?

A dog can be injured just like humans can. There can be a scratch, cut or bump on the dogs head. You can treat an injury almost the same as in humans, if there is a bump, applying ice pack will help bring down the swelling. If there is a bleeding cut, apply pressure to stop the bleeding.

What would happen if you taser your dog?

How long until worms are completelyout of a dogs body after deworming?

It depends on the type of worms.

Some are out within the week, other take 2-3 weeks, and yet others (like tapeworms) take 4-6 weeks and have to have a 2nd dose of deworming medicine administered.

Also, depending on the parasite load (how many worms they had to begin with), one dose may NOT get rid of all of them.

Is Sand in dog poop after trips to beach OK for dog?

Dogs eat all kinds of indigestible things. A small amount of sand or dirt in the stool occasionally is not a big deal. If it's a *lot* of sand, you might want to consult with a vet, but mostly the sand should pass like any other indigestible thing.

What to do if shots are given to puppies to young?

Shots should not be given under 5weeks of age, but they'll be okay unless they were vaccinated at 3weeks or less.

If they were, watch them closely; some puppies can have adverse affects.

HOWEVER, my dog was 18wks old and had TERRIBLE affects after a vaccine, so just be careful.
