Also you can get products like the furnature spray at petsmart that gets you're dog to stop chewing the furnature by making the item taste bad and will effectively stop the chewing

Most dogs react better with a treat because to them this is praise. They understand 'Good Dog' and "Bad Dog" but they still get confused. By giving them a treat for praise, they realize they are doing something good and right. If they don't get a treat, they realize they didn't do it right or did something wrong.

House training may be done many ways. A common way is to put newspapers or pads on the ground and encourage the dog to relieve themselves on those and slowly moving whatever you use closer and closer to outside (or wherever you want the dog to go to the bathroom).

It is also good practice to take the dog out at least 3 times a day, usually about an hour after the dog has eaten, and praising him or her when they go to the bathroom outside.

They start by smelling, then by touching, when they examine something new. To stop stealing, try teaching the trading game. Keep something your puppy really likes in your pockets at all times. It might be his favorite treats, a toy, or a chewie. When you see he has something you don't want him to play with, offer to trade what you have for what he has. Dogs nearly always believe that what you have is going to be better and will willingly trade. Over time, he will learn that bringing you items gives him an opportunity to trade. At least you won't be playing keep-away with him to get your belongings back. Once your pup discovers something he shouldn't play with, put it where he can't reach it until he's older. Just stick with it until he has all of his adult teeth and his drive to chew starts to decrease (usually by one year old).

Potty training should be affective in any age. I have trained a deaf, blind 17 year old western terrier (very stubburn breed) I strongly suggest a doggy door. The most importent thing in potty training is. DON'T SCOLD! The dog will get the wrong idea, thinking that you are scolding it for using the bathroom, and try to hide it in an area- often in the house. Instead after feeding it (make sure to have feeding scheduals) take it out and wait until it uses the bathroom. When it does, praise very much and give it a treat. This simple method will take a while.

teach her where her bed is also what time she needs to go to bed what time she gets up and where she goes to the bathroom. if the dog is small enough get a litter box, and where her chew toys are. also what routes she will be taken in walks.

Puppies can be in their crates all night. Just make sure you let them out to go to the bathroom right before you go to sleep and as soon as you wake up in the morning.

You should get a crate that is just large enough for the puppy. If you want to buy a large crate because your dog will get bigger, then stick a box or some kind of separator in the back of the crate to make it smaller. This makes it so that the dog will not want to go to the bathroom in its bed.

Also, keep in mind that a dog will do it's business as far away from it's food and water sources as possible. I've raised 6 or 7 litters of pups in the past 10 years (all large litters of 8 or more pups each). If it was cold and I wasn't able to keep them outside when they were old enough, I always laid newspapers down everywhere in my house where the pups could roam (started doing this as soon as the pups were old enough to get around on their own). Not a pretty sight, but protected my carpets! As the pups grew, they defecated anywhere, but always on the newspaper (because that's all they could see on the floor). As they grew older, they would defecate further and further away from where they ate and slept and generally in one location (on the newspaper). As they traveled further and further away from where they ate and slept, I would take up the newspaper except for the one location where they chose to do their business 99% of the time (accidents always happen). Pretty soon, they all were defecating in only 1 place and only on the newspaper. Not much effort at all for them to learn this. Pretty soon, they were old enough to go outside on their own, and liked it, so no problem training them to go outside to do their business. Helps, too, if you have an older dog or mom/dad to help them learn. With pups, you have to take them outside EVERY time (and as soon as) they wake up, eat, etc. The more often, the better. Their bladders just aren't big enough to hold it for very long! I don't believe in rubbing their noses in it, spanking them, then taking them outside. This seems to teach them it's not OK to poo/pee (not sure they get the not-in-the-house part)! Take the pad and place it outside. take the dog outside frequently to use the pad. over time remove the pad.

They are intelligent and love learning tricks. On housebreaking, Westies can go either way --- some are relatively easy while others are difficult. Remember, tiny dogs have tiny bladders -- so any small-breed puppy WILL take longer to housebreak than a larger breed.
