How long can it take to potty train a puppy?
We use kennel or crate training (with out potty pads) for this and we usually accomplish this in 3 to5 weeks. Night time is the worst since you have to take them out a few times for the first few weeks.
DO NOT USE THE CRATE FOR PUNISHMENT. If through out the night if your dog barks allot, try putting the dog in the crate a few minutes at a time through out the day. Using a reward to get them in helps. We trained our dogs to go in when we said night night using the reward training.
You need to pay close attention to your dog and only let them eat when you say it's time, I believe this works hand in hand. A rule of thumb is for every week old the dog is they should be able to hold it for 1 hour but don't make they try to hold it while training. When you feed or water them give, them about 5 to 15 minutes at first and take them outside. When you see that this is working you can increase the time span.
This all makes a difference to what time of the year it is also, if it's winter and you live in a snowy region and it's a pup they're not going to want to go outside when it's time. Your persistence is the number one factor, if you're not consistent neither will the dog. If this is a family thing and it shold be everyone has to use the same commands.

That way they get the hint that outside is for relieving themselves. A different answer:Yes Chihuahuas are stubborn the majority of the time, and no you do not train them on their terms...And seeing how each dog is different it really doesn't matter what different kinds of dogs you have worked with (although if you wish to bring handling different breeds into the conversation, I have 5 Chihuahuas, 1 Dachshund, 1 min-pin, 2 large mutts, 1 Australian shepherd...also i have horses, 1 pig, cats, goats...shall i go on?) Ok now, to train your little dog you will most likely want to start with paper training, pick where you will want your litter box and put papers on the ground there...once the dog starts going on the papers, put the box down with papers in it, then eventually you can mix shredded newspaper with doggie litter, and then just doggie litter...good luck training! Also, Chihuahuas can be easily wounded by harsh words, never work on training you dog if you are upset over something, also praise them like crazy when they do what they're supposed to! Treats, bell rubs, ear scratches, whatever makes your dog happy :)All dogs are able to bite (unless they are missing part of there jaw or something) however you must be sure to gentle with a dog and never to sneak up on from behind. or to touch it while it is eating. This is a training issue. All dogs, barring physical abnormalities, can and will byte. I handle "Hard / War" dogs (30+ years) and if you accustom them as pups to being approached from behind, petted, spoken too, etc. even while eating the answer is NO, they don't byte you, although there is always the occasional exception. If they nip, the most common error is not correcting any of that sort of issue as a pup (it can be done when they're adults but you'll probably need the help of an experienced trainer to manage it.)
It's really a handler/owner issue rather than something innate with dogs. Several of mine are not trained to hold (like K9s) but but as protection dogs -- they will do irreparable damage. Still, the neighborhood kids pet them while the dogs are eating, pull their ears, tail, try and ride them (which the dogs don't really appreciate) but all without any incident in three decades.
