How do you train a dog to ring a bell in the house when it needs to go out?
Hang the bell on the door and each time you go to the door to let out your dog, ring it. As soon as the dog shows any interest in the bell at all, reward with treats. After the dog begins to touch the bell withhold treats treats until he/she touches it hard enough to make noise. Be sure to take your dog out each time the bell rings so the association built is for bell=go out not noise=treats. Good luck!

Be sure to toilet your new pup in an area where strange dogs have not been. Very young puppies will not have sufficient protection from vaccinations yet to keep them safe from dangerous and potentially fatal diseases like parvo. Parvo (and other diseases) can be spread by contact with contaminated fecal material. Ask your vet when it will be safe for your puppy to have contact with unknown dogs. Until then, carry him whenever you are in an area where other dogs toilet. Just to add - places where foxes could have been are also dangerous until the puppy's vaccinations take effect. You may think that your back garden/yard has been free from strange dogs but if there's a chance that a fox has "visited" then keep the puppy away until your vet says it's ok.
How do you teach your dog to turn on the lights?
Assuming your dog is able to reach the light switch somehow, I am guessing you would start by asking your dog to put his face close to the light switch by coaxing him with a small treat. try putting it just above the light switch so that they have to move their nose close to it to get the treat. if after trying this your dog isn't realizing that he needs to turn it on to get the treat, just get him as close to it as possible, whether it be his nose you want him to do it with or his paw(which i imagine he would need to know the
"shake" command for) then once you've got him as close in contact with it as you can get him flip on the light switch for him and praise him strongly while letting him have the treat. repeat this several times, per week, not working very long in each session, getting him closer and closer to moving the light switch himself. eventually he will see the resemblance between his being near the light switch, the light coming on, and your immediate praise, and will start making an effort to do it himself, once this happens and he is consistently turning it on himself make sure to continue training sessions with him and praising him to keep it fresh in his mind. remember while doing this, after the first 3 or 4 times maybe, to associate a verbal command with it, as short of one as possible. something like "light", "lightswitch" things like that will be retained by the dog a lot better than "go turn the light on rover". One method would be to fence the yard in which you would like the dog to relieve himself. If the dog is not allowed the ability to leave the yard, he will not have the ability to defecate in your neighbor's lawn.
If your zoning laws prohibit an actual fence, there is such a thing as a virtual dog fence. In essence it is a dog collar with a small device that causes the dog some mild discomfort when he passes a boundary. This will discourage a dog from leaving your yard.
A third option is to install a dog-run wire. You attatch the dog's leash to a roller that rolls along a guide wire, which keeps the dog in your yard and out of your neighbor's.

Much for the same reason as a three year old child wets the bed. It takes some time to gain control of their bodily functions, plus a little patient training. Just like a child, try not to give it water before bedtime and let it go out as often as it needs. Then you can stretch the times until the dog has figured it out and you're both on a schedule you can work with.

Well, I've never changed a dog's name at age four, but I have changed 2 dogs' names at the age of two and one at age one. It's really not that hard and no big deal for them. The dog doesn't care. They don't think of names like we do. I just call the dog for a week or so by both names and drop the old name after he starts responding to the new one. Now, my dog doesn't even respond to his old name.

== Take your dog to a secure but open area (no roads etc) sizeable back garden will do. Have a friend hold your dog on a lead whilst you walk as far away as you can. Turn, go down on your haunches, signal the dog to get his attention by calling his name in a high pitched voice (yes, even if you are a man!). Friend releases dog, you go mad at the other end, calling his name, waving your arms around, remember, you really want this dog to prefer going to you than anywhere else. Dog should run to you when released and if he does it, then a huge reward of cuddles, kisses, fuss and a small food treat - make him feel that everytime he comes to you its worth it! If he fails and ignores you, don't chase him, this will become a wonderful game for him to engage you with! Keep coaxing him, eventually (5 hours later maybe!) he will come, and when he does, even if your annoyed it took so long, remember that reward! Don't shout, holler, threaten, he won't want to know you. Do this again, again, again, always making it great fun. Eventually you will crack it. With pups, they can be taught recall with toys etc at a very early age. So long as it is always fun to be with mum or dad they;ll come to you. Posters are correct - this and "Down" are life savers. === === * Teaching recall to a dog can be a life saver. You should first start teaching a dog indoors where there will be less distractions. Call the dog to you in a happy, excited voice. If your dog is reluctant turn to your side and squat down and avoid making direct eye contact with your dog. Use treats if necessary at first. After the dog comes to you at least 90% of the time start training outside using a retractable leash. Train in an area with as few distractions as possible at first and gradually add them. You can train faster with two people by calling the dog back and forth. We call this doggie ping pong. Also have one person hold the dog and the other run away from the dog calling his name with excitement and after they get about 30 feet away release the dog. Never call your dog to you to do something unpleasant like a nail trimming or to scold. This is a method for larger dogs only. For small dogs you would use a shorter leash and the same method as above, but don't pull too hard so the dog flips on it's back.
