Whilst recently walking in the Pyrenees in a ski area(out of season) we came across an aggressive donkey.
It quietly watched us approach down an ex-piste for over half a mile. when we got within 50 feet of it (taking a wide course) it faced us squarely and started to bray from clenched teeth and pursed lips. We stopped, it continued then advanced towards us getting louder all the time. For whatever reason it saw its tail and started chasing its own tail around and around getting faster and louder.
we took the opportunity to back off but hadn't gone far before it noticed and started advancing on us again.
The only weapons to hand were rocks and I picked up one to threaten it. it stopped for half a second and advanced again showing teeth etc. I picked up a second rock and as it advanced I clashed the rocks together, that kept it sufficiently at bay to effect an escape. It followed us at a safe distance (for it!) but did not leave us until we were back in the ski-village, which naturally was empty. On the way we and it passed some local workmen dismantling ski lift equipment. it ignored them and followed us until we were off the pasture-land.
I don't know many cars, planes or tanks that would do that, but I do know where there is a donkey that will.
Would it have killed us? - I expect so given half the chance!
