Why do ducks attack other ducks?
yes ... that's the way you get baby ducks. The different breeds of ducks are pretty distinct. That's what all the pretty plumage is about. It makes sure that the separate breeds don't inter-breed. Muscovy ducks and Roan ducks can inter-breed but the offspring will be infertile. We have a batch of ducklings that hatched on Wednesday. Six of them are pure Pekins; the Aflac duck. The Pekin hen also mated with Mallards and has five crossbred as a result. The coloration is incredible and hard to describe. What should you feed a newborn duckling that doesnt have a mother?
Only if you intervene - if another ewe has had a single lamb, rub some of the placenta on the lamb so that the ewe thinks it is also hers.
How long does it take for ducklings to hatch?
"incubated for 27-28 days to hatching with 50-60 days to fledging
so 50-60 days i guess"
At best, this is an ill formed answer, as it is not accurate. Duck eggs hatch depending on the species of duck. Mallard ducks can hatch as early as 25 days, they do not follow the "28" scenario. They could also take as long as 35 days. Everything depends on the species, the incubator temp and its humidity.
The best bet is to candle your eggs at least weekly...carefully keep records of how the embryo is progressing (of course remove undeveloping or dead embryos) This is about the only method to gauge for sure when to stop turning the Mallard eggs. I hope this info aids someone.
Will a wild fox eat the ducks in your pond?
== == A fox will eat a duck if it can catch it. Try fencing in your yard if you have animals falling victim to a fox or catch the fox in a live trap and dump him somewhere several miles away from your property. Adult ducks, however, I find very unlikely prey. They can fly and swim which make them very difficult to catch.
Foxes will go after eggs though. If you're raising ducks, and a fencing in your whole property is not an option, try putting a nestbox on a small "island" in the center of your pond (you can find instructions online) or keep your pregnant ducks in a pen. Keep the babies in the pen until they're old enough to fly and escape predators. Keeping a top on the pen is preferable so hawks and owls can't reach the babies. Any of those options will prevent you from having to kill the fox and should protect your pets.
Birds have an opening called a cloaca that acts for both reproduction and excretion. They put their cloacas together in what is called a "cloacal kiss" and the male passes his sperm to the female this way to fetilize her eggs. Some birds such as waterfowl (ducks, swans, etc) and ostriches actually do have a penis that is internal when not in use. This doesn't mean that their penis is small, it means that it can be saved inside until need. ;)
Yes, some ducks like the merganser and the teal are known to eat fish as part of their diet. They are adept at diving and swimming to catch small fish and aquatic invertebrates.
Are professional lawn company fertilizers poisonous to ducks and chickens?
== == They could be, depends on what was used.
It's better to be safe than sorry.Don't let them on the lawn for a week after it has been sprayed. Better yet, let the hens fertilize your lawn. They do a good job weeding and fertilizing at the same time. They won't eat the grass when weeds are available and they control ants, slugs and any other pest that might wander into the grass.
Can chickens ducks and turkeys live together?
----------------
Yes, they can. I have chickens, ducks and turkeys living together and they do quite well. Sometimes my one, white duck (Donald) wants to 'hump' the female turkey, though. She's not interested in the venture so I feel bad that she's being bugged. My turkey, however, is an older turkey, almost a year now and she's started to lay eggs. I think her maturity brings on Donald's sexual desires, but I don't know this to be a fact. I never see Donald 'humping' his female ducks but often seems to be at the female turkey. Go figure! :o)
-------------------
NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Turkeys shouldn't live with chickens because chickens transmit diseases that are fatal to turkeys, such as blackhead disease (shows no effect on chickens but is fatal to turkeys). Turkeys really shouldn't be within a half mile of chickens. I kept my turkeys only a few hundred feet of my chickens and they did fine.
-----------------------
I have been told that the wild turkeys can but not a lot of the domestic ones. They can pick up ecoli from the chickens and mine seem to have. I had mine in the same pin and at first they seem to do all right but then they started dropping. I've lost 4 out of 10 so far and they just seem to quit eating. I am trying to research more on this but I have lost some turkeys. I have a Holland White that seems to do good but my Bronze Wings are not.
How do you get a chicken to stay setting on a nest of eggs?
How do you get rats out of a duck pen without killing them?
Place "Have a heart" traps in the pen that are big enough for the ratst to enter but too small for the ducks. Also, put bait in the traps that ducks would not be interested in. Even if a small duck triggers the trap, it will be unhurt. You can get that type of trap at almost any Agway or Tractor Supply type store.
Do wood ducks and mallards get along?
Wood ducks and mallards may coexist peacefully in the same habitat, as each species primarily feed on different types of food and occupy different niches within the ecosystem. However, conflicts can arise over competition for resources like nesting sites or food. Overall, their interactions can vary depending on the specific circumstances of the environment.
Will mallard and wood ducks nest in the same pond?
Mallards and wood ducks are known to coexist in the same pond, as both species prefer nesting near water sources. However, individual behaviors and territoriality may vary, so it is possible that conflicts could arise between the two species if nesting sites are limited. Providing adequate habitat resources can help alleviate potential conflicts.
Probably not. They usually mate for life, and unless very young they won't accept another mate. He may come back next year alone, unless he considers it a dangerous place now. The rest of his flock may or may not come back. Once one is killed, they may deem the place too dangerous to raise babies there.
How old is the baby? If just born then it wont eat or drink for 2-3 days, it has the yolk sac as food. Ducklings are my favorite especially to hatch. The imprinting mechanism is awesome, as the first thing it sees when it comes out of the egg is its mother, even if it's a dog! Anyhow is it floppy, is the yolk sac completely in the body? Did you hatch these? Without knowing more its hard for me to help.. * Take the baby duck to the vet right away because it can be dehydrated or can starve. * Another bird may adopt this baby or if you have a dog it's been known before where the female dog will nurture all sorts of small creatures. * Try to give it another juvenile Avian companion.
What chicken has the longest tail?
The Japanese Onagadori has the longest tail.
2nd Longest Tailed ChickenThe chicken with the longest tail and tail feather is the Japanese phoenix rooster, it tail feathers have a record length of 20 feet long.
If you have a rooster and laying hens will you always get fertilized eggs?
Usually, but not always. Not all eggs are guaranteed to be fertilized - here are some factors that can determine fertility rates;
Suggestion:
Always test a new rooster as not all roosters are fertile. Separate a few proven hens with a new rooster, wait "2 weeks" to clear the hens system of a previous roosters seminal fluids then try to hatch those eggs.
How do you discourage mallard ducks from using your pool?
*We bought a white large goose (or swan?) chlorine dispenser. It has a painted beak, eyes & everything. It floats around the pool showing "movement" so the mallards won't join it. We've kept the mallards out with this goose now for over 4 seasons. Before the goose, our large 55 pound Airedale dog was trained to go after the ducks - that helped significantly. *I tried things that flap in the wind and things that make noise. They did not work. What did work was a $10.00 blow up alligator float. Blow it up and put it in the pool....works like a charm. I haven't tried it, but I read that beach balls sometimes work. Also, you can take fishing line and run two lines across the pool, they apparently don't like to touch the line when trying to land. Good luck. *We had Mallard Ducks landing in our pool. To keep them away, we did several things: 1) We bought plastic snakes and placed them around the pool, 2) We bought reflective tape and placed strips of it at various locations around the pool so it can blew in the wind, 3) We bought a fake owl and had it sitting on the diving board, and 4) We bought two beach balls with large eyes painted on the sides and hung those near the pool. I think the key is something the ducks recognize as danger--the owl or snakes or the big eyes--OR something that moves--the tape. *We tried everything last year: frogs that make a noise when you pass in front of it, lots of blow up toys, dangling multi-coloured objects that move in the wind, and metal cats with glass eyes. Then one day last Spring the two Mallards disappeared. They returned again with 8 babies in late Autumn. Now the pool is continually like a dung heep. We are about to try the two strips of twine pegged in across the pool and we will let you know how they do. *I used an inflatable octopus ring toss toy. It is about 7 feet in diameter and stands about 3 feet tall. I've secured it in the center of the pool. Since I did that, I have not had one duck in the pool. Good Luck! *I have a waterfront home with a pool and the ducks just walk up the bank and have pool parties day and night. My neighbor said that a fake gator would scare them off, so we bought a 6ft. concrete one and painted it to look real. The ducks are actually sitting on top of it now! We bought a motion detector that emits a loud sound and flashes lights, but it didn't phase them. I tried using a water hose, but they like the fresh cool water. We also tried a low powered BB gun on their rear. That works, but the BB's end up in the pool and leave rust spots. I thought about having them for a BBQ but I can't do that. Ducks mate for life and anyone that can do that has my respect so I guess I'll give up and clean up. Good luck to all! *We went to our local pool store and bought a pengiun, a dolphin and I think a seahorse that bob around the pool like little punching bags. You fill the bottoms with water for weight and the bodies are filled with air. The ducks have not landed in the pool since we put them in. There is evidence of their presence on the rails of the pool (which is much easier to clean then the bottom of the pool) but not in the water itself. They were a whopping $2.49/each and worth every penny. *I understand that Disney uses a predator scent in their pools to keep ducks and other animals out. I have yet to find anything on the market. You could try real gator pee.
What animals can hatched from egg?
Animals that can hatch from eggs include birds, reptiles (such as snakes and lizards), fish, amphibians (such as frogs and salamanders), and certain invertebrates (such as insects and arachnids). Mammals, however, do not hatch from eggs.
Ducks typically lay their eggs in nests that they build on the ground, often lined with grass, feathers, and down for insulation. The female duck will find a secluded spot near water to build her nest and lay her eggs.
How big does a knife have to be before it's considered a sword?
There isn't a strict measurement to distinguish a knife from a sword, but generally speaking, a sword is typically longer than 18 inches while a knife is shorter. Additionally, swords are often designed for two-handed use, whereas knives are usually used with one hand.
Why do you need to incubate the yeast before you start?
Incubating yeast before using it in a recipe allows it to become activated and begin fermenting, which is necessary for leavening the dough or achieving the desired flavors in the final product. The incubation process helps to ensure that the yeast is alive and healthy, leading to better fermentation and rising of the dough.
What are the medicinal actions of the horsetail plant?
Horsetail plant has been traditionally used for its diuretic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. It is also believed to support wound healing, bone health, and skin conditions due to its high silica content. However, scientific evidence supporting these medicinal actions is limited and more research is needed to confirm its efficacy.
Ducks and geese are different species due to reproductive isolation, meaning they cannot interbreed and produce fertile offspring. This is a key characteristic of the species level of organization that distinguishes them. Additionally, they may have differences in their physical characteristics, behaviors, or ecological niches that further separate them as distinct species.
Does sitting down make you drunker?
Sitting down does not directly make you drunker. However, sitting can slow down the rate of alcohol absorption in your body compared to standing or moving around, which can influence how quickly you feel the effects of alcohol.
