(Sighs) Long story, but let's go back to the 80's. A new wave of music called emo showed up, with relatively catchy poetic punk pop tunes. Fans are called emos, like how punk fans are punks and so on. Suddenly, some fans take the meaning of the songs too seriously and literally and cut themself or become depressed. First emo was music, then it became a style and depression related thing, then it became a suicide cult shortly after the black parade was released. The daily mail blamed my chemical romance for a young girl's suicide, and starts fear amongst the people calling bands like my chem and fall out boy cults. It goes on, and suddenly we have scene kids. Scene kids are even more poser like, and annoying. They get steriotypical emo hairdos, and dye their hair neon colors. They also listen to dubstep, unlike normal emo kids, and instead of being sad, they are always trying to find something witty and sarcastic to say. Emo has died off, and now we have scene kids. As for how kids become emo, 2 things, attention or because they are stupid. Some kids just can't grasp the concept of a depressing song, or a figurative picture, and they take it too far. Others, despite the fact that they claim to be outcasts, and original, they just find the emo cult to be cool, and they wanna have emo friends, listen to emo music, and have the hair. They are all posers. If someone really says they're emo, they're really not. And remember, bands like My Chem, Greenday, and Fall Out Boy are not emo, emo is bands like dashboard confessional, rites of spring, etc.

Depressed teens are not new. You didn't go back far enough. In the '50s we called them beatniks. There was beat cafes and beat poetry. Prior to WWII, if you were depressed, you stayed home behind closed doors or, if you had a strong personality, you became a 'bohemian'. 'Emo' is only the most recent evolution of combining style with a need to express how you feel. Everything old is new again.
What is the difference between emo and scene?
Scene kids are very bright. They usually like bright things like neons, and are bold , outgoing, bubbly, random, and silly. Scene people in pictures usually have extreme poofage in their hair, maybe with big bows, and usually have a pose with their tongues out or something silly and confident, though they may not be confident. Scenes can be emotional like emos, they even can have problems and be depressed too. Scenes usually like rave and crunkcore and trance core and pop. Also famous icons like Adventure Time and Gir. They usually don't cut.
Emos tend to like colors such as black and red more. Many emos do cut, but many non-emos do too. They are usually into MCR and senses fail. Emos do have similar hair of Scenes, except no poofage or decorations. They may be quieter than Scenes, and not have many friends, a "loner". Pictures of emos may be someone with "emo hair" looking into the distance, or looking directly at the camera with an emotionless face.

Use wax, and serums creams. Go emo, emos have nice hair, because of their fringe

If you want to go more towards the scene look you can buy hairspray, that has good hold and rake, through the back of your hair, with your fingers and spraying it up. After it dries all the way, straighten it up, it will stay longer. For the fringe, you can get sprays, that you put on before you blow-dry, That is heat-activated, and makes your hair super-smooth. Moreover, they have some that you use before you straighten it, and it works good too. Plus, use a good conditioner and shampoo.
What is the real meaning of being emo?
Being emo does not exactly mean you cut yourself. I am emo and i do not cut myself. And all emos are not bi or gay. I am not. Also emo hair can be black, blonde, brown,ginger or multi-colored.

Emo, or its full name emotive hardcore which can be shortened to emocore is a sub genre of hardcore punk formed in 1984-5 in Washington D.C. It's not mainstream and you will not hear any real emo bands on the TV, radio or at Warped Tour. Some real emo bands are Rites of Spring, Embrace, Gray Matter, Indian Summer, Cap'n Jazz, American Football, Jets To Brazil and Jawbreaker.
A real emo person would listen to these bands which understanding of the background and history subgenre without being a stereotypical modern emo.
A typical real emo person may wear flat shoes, boot cut (or any type of jeans), sweaters with a real emo band shirt underneath, thick rimmed glasses and a messenger bag which carries their pencils and diary.
A poseur emo listens to alternative rock or metalcore bands which he or she labels 'emo / screamo' while labelling herself or himself emo. They probably wear too much eyeliner and dark clothing which they think is emo style when emos are not dark.

go to local retail shops, um target sells cheap vintage looking t-shirts. khouls has skinny jeans cheaper than hot topic...i think, spencers, media magic...google it, like forums like vampirefreaks and emobucket have good emo clothes
If you're looking for emo clothing, most clothing stores have that. I saw some tight jeans at a H&M store, and vintage shirts can be found in about any clothing store. So can hoodies. Converse shoes, skate shoes, or Vans (usually checkered) can be found at most shoe shops. Then you just have to style your hair.
I don't know where you can find gothic/industrial or punk clothing though.

I've ut my own hair since I was 10 so about four years.. I told my parents I wanted to be independent and not have the same haircut that everyone else has and it saves money that can be used for more useful things like saving up for a car when your older. plus it looks better if you can add you own personal touch:)

well i can only say it realy depends on the guy but for most girlz in new jersey wat realli works the most iz the flips in the back with nice bangs to the side or u know how ever goes with ur face structure..
