Ethics and Morality

Ethics is about what we should – and should not - do. It includes identification of basic principles, e.g. the prerogatives of property owners; and the application of those principles to actual situations, e.g. copyright protection of intellectual property over the Internet.

What are correct statements kant's categorical imperative?

Off the top of my head, Kant didn't speak in epistemelogical terms of truth or correct; instead, he was concerned with statements or rules regarding actions to a given situation that can/could universally be considered moral and praiseworthy and accurately guide someone as to what they ought to do. So, the first criteria was that if and only if a rule acted upon is logically universalizable (e.g., 'One ought to lie with regard to condition x' logically cannot be universalized because it destroys any truth value, lie or not, when condition x arises) and that if and only if the rule acted upon treats humans only as ends in themselves and not mere means (e.g., don't use people), then the rule accurately guides what one ought to do and any action resulting from following such is both moral and praiseworthy. Note, there are some tricky caveats - the person who develops and acts on some rule that is moral and gains some satisfaction from doing such is not praiseworthy; these have to be situations where you act against what you really really would prefer. So if 'I ought to punch jaywalkers in the face' and it meets the universal criterion and I love doing the moral act so much I run around town punching people in the face, my action is not praiseworthy, but it might just happen to be moral. Also, any rule you think of that meets both criteria does not imply it's legal. So, unfortunately, you can't legally punch jaywalkers in the face even though it might be moral and, further, if some offer their praise for your action.

According to Scruton sexual morality must be based on the permanent features of human nature not the conditions of any particular person's life What permanent features does he mean?

permanent features, meaning our quality of our life, our standards of being inherently proper and moral. permanent features of human nature would be our spirit, morals and dignity they way it should be. 'not the conditions of any particular person's life' means just not what one person wants at any given moment.

that's a great question!

Can a man live without honor?

A man can physically live with out honor. Spiritually he could not. There has to be a drive, and a purpose for his life. The man has to live with some kind of pride. Not the selfish pride, but being proud of his family. He could also be proud of the hard work that he has done. he could also be proud of his religion. Being proud to be a christian, and knowing the love that his Savior has for him. If a man does not live with honor he will live a very sad life.

Why should human persons arrive at the objective norm or standard of morality?

AnswerIf we do away with all objective standards then we are left with the subjective and changeable standards of people. These can be good but they can also be frequently selfish, exploitive and violent. Many would assert that there is no such thing as either absolute truth nor any objective standard of morality. Those who have actually lived under communism, which has at its heart the philosophy of atheism supported by evolution (this being acknowledged in an increasing number of books including Peter Hitchens' The Rage Against God ) know what it is like to experience a governing power and a society where the previous Christian moral standard was explicitly rejected. Personal freedom is one of the first things to go -what one must do and believe is already decided.

Since humans have a long history (including the 20th Century communist regimes) of getting it wrong, this is why it is only safe to adopt a standard that comes from outside ourselves, from our maker.
