It is not possible in an unmodded game. The armored Vault 21 jumpsuit was cut from the game and can only be acquired through console commands. The jumpsuit is seen worn by the Courier in the ending credits, tough.

I find ED-E to be a lot better than Rex, particularly on hardcore mode. Rex has a high perception and no ranged attacks, so when he detects an enemy, he runs straight towards it and usually gets him handed to him. Plus, if you upgrade ED-E's attack abilities by lending him to the Followers of the Apocalypse, I find he can actually do more damage than any other companion.

You can't become idolized by the Brotherhood unless you have the Lonesome Road DLC add on. Its just one of those things.
