Rudolph, who remarried eight years ago, is still a songwriter and runs a music licensing company and does music production. Their two children, Marc, 31, and Maya, 26, work with him at his company in the Venice section of Los Angeles. Maya also is a singer and actress. "I was only seven when my mom died," she recalled. "It's hard to lose a parent that young. My memories are specific and also kind of dream-like. I was becoming aware of who I was, but I was still pretty small. We didn't have video cameras like kids do now. So, my memories are based on music and pictures. I definitely remember going to see my parents play. Other than living in the house with my parents, that was the most indelible mark. I remember going down to the basement and there were instruments everywhere. My mom loved animals. We had tons of birds. And fish. And frogs. My God. We had a farm pretty much." Marc, who was 11 when his mom died, said the beautiful, timeless music his mother gave the world still makes him feel good. But, his memories are of a loving mother, not an artist. "I really think of her as my mom. I have memories of her when I was in elementary school: the simple things, cooking food, us having talks, having her come to my baseball games. The music is nice, but what means a lot more to me was that she was my mom. The music helps with the memories. I'm not surprised it's endured." Rudolph, now 52, vividly remembers meeting Riperton at a nightclub in Chicago. "I always thought it was kismet or destiny. We were both pretty young and we kind of recognized each other when we met. She was at the top of the stairs and I was at the bottom. We were attracted to each other. Well, I was attracted to her. We got together right away." He pointed out that those high notes she could hit so easily came as the result of much work and preparation. "She studied music; she studied opera and did voice training from the time she was a little girl. She worked at it and enhanced it." And she paid dues. Long before she soared to the top of the music charts in 1975, she sang professionally, starting as a teenager. Rudolph said she was a receptionist at Chess Records and sang backup for such music legends as Etta James, the Dells and Ramsey Lewis. "She sang background on (the Fontella Bass hit) Rescue me," he said. She also worked with Stevie Wonder, who later helped out on some of her music. Besides Lovin You, her other major hits included Adventures in Paradise, Memory Lane and Inside My Love. When she died, Rudolph said he and the kids had to help each other out to make it. Maya, who describes herself as a "daddy's girl," said he was wonderful, except for making her braids lopsided. Marc graduated from Brown University in Rhode Island, and Maya went to the University of California at Santa Cruz. Rudolph has no other children. Reflecting on her life and how quickly the last 20 years have passed, Rudolph said: "Twenty years have passed, and yet she's very real and her contributions and her gift to the world still exist and still move people in a positive direction. The thing that Minnie would be happiest about today is that people are still moved in a positive direction by her music. And she'd be happy to see how beautiful and strong her children are. I think she knows. I hope they make her as happy as they make me."
