In Field Hockey, trapping is catching the ball by pinning it between the stick and the ground, after which the player can move with the ball.

In US football, it means that a forward pass is ruled incomplete because the player did not cleanly catch the pass, but caught it between his body and the ground.

But please, don't be discouraged! Out of my six years of playing field hockey , I have had two friends who play but they are left handed.

The goalie

A short corner or penalty corner occurs in field hockey. It is awarded for a foul inside the shooting circle or for a deliberate foul within the 23-metre line. The situation is very tactical and most teams will spend a long time practicing routines to try and score.

A short corner is played by having someone inject the ball from the correct line usually on the left side of the goal (looking at it) with a very forceful drag to a person on the top of the circle. The ball must pass outside of the circle before a goal can be scored. After the ball is in the right position a team might try a number of strategies including drag flicks, hard strikes, complicated passing routines and dummies to score.

When defending against one only 5 players (including the goalkeeper, if present) are allowed back and must remain behind the base line until the ball is hit. The defending players will usually wear additional defensive equipment such as face masks and thicker gloves for protection depending upon the role they play.

Certain rules applied during the corner are different from regular play, also.

If the first shot taken during a corner is a hit, then it may only enter the goal below the height of the backboard to be a legal goal. Flicks and deflections can get around this retriction, which is why they are often-practiced skills and also why those who can dragflick well score most often during corners.

In indoor and field hockey, only a player with goalkeeping priveleges may use the feet; any other use will be penalised. In ice hockey, any player may use their skates to stop the ball (or puck as is the case).

A foul will usually result in a free hit to the other side, if within the 25 yard line it will result in a penalty corner, if in the "D" or the strike zone it will result in a penalty shoot out.

The rules of the men's and women's games are basically the same.The only significant difference that I know is that the women's game does not allow body checking as in the men's game.I believe that a deliberate bodycheck in the women's game draws at least a minor penalty.

A scoop is what you do to often lift the ball over opposing players' feet and sticks. Similar to a flick, you put the center of your stick under the ball, and push up quickly, so the ball raises a good foot off the ground.

Penalty corner in hockey is caused by a foul in the D (the scoring area) e.g. a foot.

For 11 a side:

During a penalty corner the defending team can have 4 defenders and the goalie stand in the goal - behind the line. The attacking team can have as many as they want (usually about 6) who stand just on/a step behind the line of the D. The rest of the players for both teams must stand behind the half way line. One attacking player stands on the backline ready to pass the ball out to the top of the D where their team mates are.

When whistle goes attacker passes the ball and all defenders run out - 2 defence: 1 runs at the person they believe will get the ball and the other defendergoes to the person they think the ball carrier will pass to. The other two defenders take a couple of steps out and stand near to the goal posts. The goalie takes a few steps out and makes themself as large as possible. Meanwhile attackers must take the ball outside the D before entering the D. Then they may pass or have a shot at goal.

The other players at the half way line may run back to goal as soon as whistle goes.
