If a firebox is elevated the hearth should be?
By Federal guidelines a Hearth has to be at least the height of the Firebox if not above the Firebox. If a firebox is elevated a hearth should be of equal height or higher. There may be a loop hole if the Firebox is more than 12 inches off the ground, you may not be required to have a Hearth at this point, but I'm not positive.

Who blamed the Christians for burning rome?

How do you replace gas fireplace switch?
This depends on the switch. A lot of older fireplaces have a millivolt valve with a toggle-switch sticking out. We usually remove the toggle switch and run the 2 wires that were connected to the toggle to a remote receiver box. This way any simple remote transmitter will act like an electrical toggle switch. Most receivers will recognize hundreds of thousands of signals so this is usually very convenient and takes about 3 minutes to turn a manual switch into a remote switch.
How do you build a fireplace blower?
Not all fireplaces have blowers so this is going to depend on your model. The blower is a part of the firebox and is usually inserted in a trap-door under the floor of the fireplace. From there the spinning louvers will send air out the bottom front or up along the back wall to turn and emit from above the opening of the fireplace. The actual blower looks like a soda can with long louvers running the length so the spinning can will generate additional air flow. Having installed and repaired dozens of these I would not attempt to "build" one. If your firebox is designed for a blower with the electrical requirements and the flue area defined add ing a blower designed for that box is cheap and simple.

How do you open a frozen chimney damper?
Assuming you have access to the hinge mechanism. This item will probably be made of cast iron, and the hinge mechanism has rusted solidly.
Care must be exercised to avoid breaking the cast iron as it is a brittle material, and some of its substance will have been consumed into making rust. Thus the cross-section of the material will already have been reduced!
One of the spray lubricants is your best chance, but remember, there is no way to recover the material that has already turned to rust. Give it a good spray, and leave for a few hours for the spray to penetrate.
Try and get a tiny bit of movement. Try some more spray.
Once you have a small movement, then further movement will abrade the rust into a powder. But realize that is what you are doing.
Are unvented fireplace logs considered safe?
Yes. Federal laws define what can be called a vent-free appliance and the laws mandate a strict limit on the amount of gas flowing to the appliance as well as oxygen-depletion sensors and safety features -- like a safety valve using a solenoid, electromagnet and thermocouple -- that make it impossible for gas to leak. The biggest nuisance is that fire still pulls in oxygen to burn and then emits back out like an open air pump except there is no ventilation so the flames sucking-in air can pull-in fumes from cleaning products, candles, detergents, etc and sometimes these chemicals can smell pretty bad once they have been pulled into the heated fireplace and pushed back out again after passing through the flames. When people complain it is usually because of smells.
It's called a fireplace bellow I believe.
Which vents should be open upper or lower vent on fireplace?
I would think both. Cold air from the room goes in the bottom and warmer air comes out the top.
What if you burn unseasoned wood?
If you have some seasoned wood use it to get the fire started then add a little unseasoned wood with it. It is not advisable to burn a great deal of unseasoned wood since the sap will not allow it to burn without a great deal of smoke which will line the flue with creosote and a chimney fire may result. There are some additives that can be purchased at hardware and department stores that help alleviate the creosote problem. Check and clean your chimney regularly if unseasoned would is all you have to burn.
What do you use in front of a fireplace to keep sparks from the floor or rug?
place a hearth stone and use a fireplace screen
Does rotating a gas valve on an indoor fireplace counterclockwise open or close the gas line?
All gas fireplaces have to have a shut-off valve within 10' and that will turn so the key or the handle is parallel to leave gas on and perpendicular to turn gas off. The valve inside the fireplace turns but not indiscriminately. The inner valve will turn to the pilot setting and depress to light the pilot. Once the pilot os stable the knob will un-depress and turn to the On position. For a manual valve this will turn on the gas flow to the main burners. If using a switch or remote turning the valve to On leaves the fireplace valve in a Ready position so the switch or remote will turn on the gas.

If a gas fireplace is on and the electricity goes out will the fireplace continue to work?
It really all depends on the type of Fireplace you have.
Fireplaces usually run on a pilot with a thermocouple or thermopile. These produce their own milivolts to run the gas valve. These type of fireplaces do not need power to ignite. If the fireplace's on/off switch is a remote that runs off of batteries or is a switch on the faceplate of the fireplace, then this fireplace should work with no power.
Most fireplaces have a blower that circulates the warm air it generates. This fan would be running on 120v from the street and would not work when the power goes out. You may still have a flame on, but all the heat it generates is going out the stack.
Other fireplaces have no fan and are mainly for looks.
You may have a fireplace that is dependent on the 120volts and will do nothing.
Check the operation manual on your fireplace.
