Where can you get parts for a Charmglow fireplace?

Contact the manufacturer- last number I had for customer service was 1-888-346-7539. If that is not a good number, check with Lowes and Home Depot- they both carried Charmglow. Switches seem to be a weak point on these. Good luck-

Is black locust wood safe to burn in a fireplace?

Yes, it burns very hot. Many find the smell unpleasant, but it is as safe as any other wood to burn.

Is wood from Aspen trees good to burn?

Fair. Splits well, burns easily, not a lot of heat. But when I lived in Colorado, you had a choice of Aspen or Fir/ Spruce- and Aspen was the better of the two. Heat output is about 60% of white oak.

Is pine good wood to burn in a fireplace?

Pine will make great kindling- to light the fire. However, it will burn very quickly, produce few coals for long lasting heat, and produces a lot of creosote that will need to be cleaned from your chimney. It would be a good idea to keep a little dry pine for kindling, but find a good hardwood such as oak, ash, or hickory for your main fuel wood.

How do you bank a fire in an open fireplace?

Start with a good thick bed of ash, and a hot fire. Add logs to the fire. Once they are burning, push them together tightly to restrict airflow. Use a shovel to cover the logs in ash. Next morning, rap the logs to loosen ash, pull logs apart from each other, add kindling, and coals that you "banked" should flame up.

Can a portable air conditioner be vented through a fireplace flu and chimney?

Yes, this is a great way to exhaust a single hose portable air conditioner. You would simply need to adapt the hose connections to the front of your fireplace. I have seen an installation where the front of the fireplace was sealed with a piece of plexiglas. The plexiglas had been custom cut to fit the portable AC's fittings.

Is sterno safe for fireplace use?

Yes, and there are false fireplaces made that use Sterno type fuels. Not much in the way of heat, but used for "mood" fires.

How do Gas Fireplaces work to heat homes?

In additional to radiating heat into the room many gas fireplaces have a heat exchanger- cool air is drawn into the shell around the firebox, and warmed air comes out of the vents at the top.

Should you use hardwood for fireplace?

Well seasoned hardwood, such as oak or ash is perhaps the best wood there is for fireplaces and woodstoves. High heat output, low creosote production, great long lasting fires.

What is the temperature of a fireplace?

That will depend on the fuel being burned, the draft fanning the fire, and WHERE in the fireplace you measure the temperature. Parts of the firebox can reach temperatures of around 1500 degrees F when burning dry hardwood under draft- coal can be hotter still.

Is magnolia wood good for burning?

Magnolia has a heat value similar to Willow. It is not as good as Oak, but better than Poplar. It will need seasoning (drying), and will weigh about 35 lbs per cu ft when dry, compared to Oak at 57 lbs per cu ft. Not bad wood, not the best.

Why does glass on a wood burning stove get dirty?

The glass on a wood stove will get dirty because of creosote deposits - smoke. The solution is to aim for a cleaner burn, which might mean going to a cleaner burning wood, better seasoned wood, or increasing the draft and letting the stove burn hotter. You should also check the flue system and chimney to see that they are clean and free of obstructions, including both creosote and little piles of ash built up in such places as bends of the pipe.

Will wood burner backdraft if the flue hasn't been fire cemented?

Typically smoke can blow back into the house from a wood stove or fireplace if air pressure outside is higher than air pressure inside. Vent fans running inside, chimney of wrong height, prevailing winds, etc. The real issue with flues are safety- an unlined flue can develop small leaks, permitting sparks to enter the house. MAJOR problem during a chimney fire. If your flue does not have a clay liner in good condition, then it should be lined with metal or refractory mortar (fire cement). I do not think you CAN clean an unlined flue properly. Have a good chimney man inspect what you have, and check the design of the chimney, height above surrounding structures, size and condition. If in doubt about their recommendations, get a second opinion. There are a lot of variables, and I can't give you a single answer- sorry.

What is h5 tanalised wood?

Tanalised is a term used in Europe for wood that has been treated to resist rot and insects. In the US it is known as CCA, after the metals used in treating the wood- Chrome, Copper, and Arsenic. This wood has been withdrawn from consumer contact applications- like handrails, surface deck boards, etc, due to concerns about arsenic leaching out of the wood. Wood treated with arsenic should NOT be burned due to health hazards, and safety measures should be taken to avoid breathing dust if sand, sawing or routing treated lumber.
