What is ballast in a F1 car?

Ballast is any heavy metal used in cars and boats to aid in stability and control.

F1 cars are constructed well under the minimum weight (640 kg/1141 lbs including the driver and his helmet) so ballast is used to bring the car up to minimum weight requirements. Tungsten steel is generally used due to its high density.

Since ballast can be placed anywhere in the car, it can be used to tweak the car to how the driver likes to drive or improve handling and tire wear, among other things. Placing ballast over the front wheels will aid the car by giving it more grip in tight corners. Ballast in the front endplate can help balance and ballast on the underbody keeps the car's center of gravity down. Teams will move ballast around in the car from race to race based on the circuit that is being driven. Where they place the ballast for a race in Monaco is different than where it will be for Spa or Monza.

Is Lewis hamilton black british?

You need to be more specific as to whether you mean Lewis' ethnicity or his appearance. In terms of his appearance - as with all those with afro type hair and brown coloured skin with all its shades are perceived - I would say yes, he's 'black' (he indicated this at the 2011 Monaco Grand Prix during an interview following an unnecessary incident with another driver).

As for his ethnicity, according to the recent 2011 census, I would say based on his parents - his British born father Anthony of Grenadian, Caribbean decent and his mother white Anglo Saxon decent - that he is of White and Black Caribbean decent. Since that census form has a section to declare your place of birth he would have indicated that he was born in England, United Kingdom and so that would define him as British.

Regarding Monaco, I could have elaborated on Lewis' experiences suffering from racial taunts in Spain while testing a McLaren F1 car also possibly in lesser formulas. Similarly bullying at school primarily because of his minority appearance (I believe jealousy also was a factor), but I'm sure those are documented elsewhere. Nonetheless, when you take the time to reflect on those matters it seems natural that such negative experiences would encourage a youngster to lean more toward a culture where one feels most accepted and comfortable. If that happens to be collectively 'black and proud' however you maybe superficially perceived, then so be it.

Who is the tv director of Formula one?

There is not one Director of the Formula One broadcast for every race. There is a different Director for every race, and the Director is from the country Formula One is racing in that week. You might notice while watching the race in Japan, the Director might have a camera show the Japanese driver much more than normal. A race in Brazil, that Director seems to show the Brazilian drivers more than other races. The Director's seem to favor showing the drivers from their home country.

How do you adjust the camber on a 1997 grand prix?

You can buy what they refer to as camber bolts that you put where the strut mounts to the knuckle, which are oblong, and allow for adjustment. My alignment guy says they have a hard time getting them to work correctly and stay in place so the alternative is to elongate the lower mounting hole in the strut to allow adjustment. That would probably be the best way. When you buy aftermarket struts, they are usually already elongated.

Why do drag racing tires have no tread - isn't tread supposed to increase traction?

In ideal conditions, dry weather, great road surface etc. slick tyres offer more rubber to the road therefore greater traction. Normal road tyres are a compromise, on any one trip your car may have to cope with sunshine, rain, sleet, snow, bad road surface, smooth surface, mud, and gravel. Manufacturers have to make a tyre that can cope with that. The result is the tyre on your car.
