In 1863, Cambodia under king Norodom became a protectorate of France. What it means to be a protectorate is to be a weak state under a much stronger state, or in this case a country. The reason the French signed to take over Cambodia was because they were afraid the Siamese would expand too fast (and far), so they signed weakening the Siamese protection. The first French rule was fairly peaceful, until it ended in WWII because Japan took over. Though in 1946 (about 4 years later) the French went back to Cambodia and brought Communism with them. After much struggle Cambodia eventually won their independence in 1953. Cambodia would never be ruled by France again.

Why do the french drive on the left?
They do not....your confused with Great Brittain, Australia, India and South Africa
They did, ... but in Medieval Times only (as all Europeans had to because if two horses with armed knights had to come past each other on a narrow lane, only the left side was good as on that side were the arms. If they met on the right side the two arms would collide, therefore the natural side to ride or later drive was the left side. Until the French decided to change that for military reasons in order to confuse the British whose intrusion they feared. Powerful as the French were they forced the rest of the continent to do the same.
The result today is that the whole world drives on the wrong side except Great Brittain, Australia, India, Thailand, Japan, South Africa and a few other braves. Vive la France ;(
