What size furnace for a 1400 square foot two story home?
2.5 tons at least but you have so many other factors to consider.
What would make a furnace blower stay on continuously?
broken vaginalsitila Usually a stuck switch in the motor itself. I would take the motor out (usually really easy job- Make sure that power to motor is off!!) Take it to your local motor shop and usually it will cost anywhere from 25 to 75 bucks to repair, as opposed to the 150 to 300 bucks for a repairman to do it. I used to own a laundromat and did this on a weekly basis. If the weather is to cold to have it out of service for long ask the motor shop if they could possibly fix it at once. For a few bucks more they'll probably do it.
What is a furnace control system?
A furnace by definition provides heat. There must be something that controls that heat; that is that tells the furnace when to fire up the burners and when to shut down the burners. This function is provided by the furnace control system. Usually the control system itself is controlled by a thermostat which maintains the temperature at a preset level on the thermostat.
The air flow up your chimney that carries the products of combustion (flue gases) out of your house.
How much can you save on a new furnace?
When my customers ask how long will it take to pay back for the high efficiency furnace in gas savings, I tell them this.
You can determine your payback time by using your energy bills from the last 12 months. First look at three months during the summer, say June, July, August. Add the 3 months gas bills then divide this by 3. This gives you a average per month amount for the appliances other than the furnace since you do not use the furnace in the summer. Next multiply this average per month number by 12. This is how much you spent on gas for the whole year on every appliance except the furnace. Now add up the 12 months total gas bills and subtract the amount that you figured above for the 12 months of other appliances. This gives you an accurate amount that you spent on just the furnace in gas for an entire year. Now if your furnace is 25 years old it probably has an efficiency rating of 60% AFUE. That means about 60 cents out of every dollar spent on the furnace gas heats the house and 40 cents goes up the chimney. The new high efficiency furnaces are 95% efficient so only 5 cents out of every dollar is wasted out the vent. You can now get bids on new furnaces to check your payback. Say the new furnace costs $2600.00. At the $2600.00 example you can use this to determine the payback. Let us assume a energy bill to use as an example. Say your last years gas bill for just the furnace that you calculated above was $2250.00. This may be a common amount in Minnesota. 95% is 35% more efficient than 60%. $2250.00 multiplied by 35% is $787.50 per year in savings. Using this example the payback would be $2600.00 divided by $787.50 which is 3.30 or about 3 and 1/3 years. Do not forget to take into account the old furnace may break down and the payback would be quicker and how much is peace of mind worth?
If the old furnace is more than 60% AFUE efficiency then just use the efficiency in the calculations. This method eliminates overestimating payback period in order to give an honest answer.
What should you consider when buying a furnace?
Finding an honest furnace or air conditioner review is hard because everyone is biased in one way or another. I decided to write this furnace review to give my opinion with facts that I have accumulated over the years.
I have been repairing and installing furnaces and air conditioners for 27 years so I have a good amount of experience in the subject.
I have found that furnaces have evolved over the years to a point now where all of the manufacturers are offering a high quality product that will last many years. When high efficiency furnaces first came out, each manufacturer had its own idea on how to build a furnace and by trial and error they slowly worked out the problems to where now they are all are building a good furnace.
The furnace manufacturers actually just build the heat exchanger, cabinet, housings etc. They buy the circuit boards, motors, burners, controls, limit switches, draft inducers, pressure controls, gas valves, ignition controls, and hot surface igniters from the companies that build parts like GE, Emerson, Honeywell, White Rodgers, Robertshaw, etc.
You generally read comments about furnace brands that have a negative slant. This is because people who have had a bad experience tend to have the drive to tell the world about it while the people who are satisfied are content to leave it at that. The truth is every brand has to be repaired now and then and since the manufacturers who build the main working parts of the furnaces build them for every furnace manufacturer, I do not see a big difference in number of repairs from one brand to the next.
Then how should you choose which furnace brand to buy? It is important to purchase your furnace from someone you can trust to install it properly and who will back up the warranty if something should go wrong later on. I recommend that you try to buy locally so you are important to the business that you are buying from and not just another anonymous customer who does not matter. The manufacturer's warranty is a big factor to look at. If the furnace does break in the future, you don't want to be stuck with a large repair bill. Today you can find lifetime warranties on heat exchangers and 10 years on all other parts. If they don't offer this warranty, keep looking because most do and it is better to let the manufacturer pay for the repair instead of you. After all if they spend all of that money on advertising trying to convince you to buy their furnace let them back it up with a good warranty!
Don't pay for your furnace over and over again with high gas bills. There are two somewhat standard efficiency ratings on furnaces that are sold today, 80% and 96%. You can think of the difference as being this: for every dollar that you pay your utility company for natural gas for your furnace, with the 80% model, 80 cents out of every dollar heats the house and 20 cents is wasted up the chimney. The 96% efficiency model only loses 4 cents out of every dollar out the vent. So can see over time the amount of money you can save by installing a 96% furnace will easily pay for the difference in price over the 80% model and save you money every year after that.
All furnace manufacturers have websites that you can review their products. The thing to watch out for while you look for a new furnace is not to be dazzled by a celebrity who is trying to convince you that one brand is better than the next without telling you the things that matter like warranty and price.
I hope this clears up some of the confusion in trying to pick one brand over another.

Are goodman furnaces and good?
I once worked on a Goodman AC unit for a friend as a favor and I thought it was a very low end unit. Compressor was dead at the start of the second cooling season. But they are less expensive than the big boys so for this reason there is a market for their product and I don`t blame them. People are getting what they pay for. It`s just unfortunate the average end user most times does not know they are really doing this on the cheap, and thinking that they are getting a good price compared to some other bids they may have gotten. I should add I don`t think that particular job was done by an HVAC professional so it would not be fair to lay all of the blame on Goodman. But had the unit been equipped with some standard safeties the machine may not have hurt itself due to a simple refrigerant leak left over from original install.
Yes, a furnace requires a ground wire as part of its electrical system. The ground wire provides a safe path for electrical current to flow to the ground in the event of a fault, such as a short circuit. The ground wire is typically a green or bare copper wire that is connected to the metal frame of the furnace and to the grounding system of the building.
Different furnace manufacturers may have slightly different ground wiring requirements, so it's important to consult the manufacturer's instructions when installing or modifying a furnace. However, regardless of the manufacturer, it's important to have the ground wiring installed correctly by a licensed electrician to ensure it's done safely and up to code. Furnace smells of oil but works fine?
Have it looked at by your oil company, they'll generally do an assessment for free.
It's probably nothing but you don't want to take the chance.
Think about the possibilities ...carbon monoxide, fire,
make the call.
Do you need a cold air return on your furnace?
YES! If you do not have a cold air return on your furnace, you will have much higher heating bills as you will not be circulating the cold air from your home back to the furmace to be heated again.
I furnace was installed when the house was built in the 60's. The furnace has a wire basket, which I have to by the filter, cut to size and replace. My question can I use a regular air filtr for my furnace.
Furnace pilot light keeps going out?
There are several reasons why a pilot light could be going on. One reason is there could be a light breeze that is extinguishing the flame.
Bridge wall in a furnace is the section the radiation section ends and the convection section begins
How does a furnace multi speed motor work?
Mutli speed furnace motors work on a basis of horse power verses work load. The motor actually contains multiple windings or you could say multiple motors. Each of the windings has a specific horse power rating at a given work load. For example, a 3 speed 1/2 horse power motor is actually 3 different horse powers. High is 1/2 hp - medium is 1/3 hp - low is 1/4 hp. As the motor horse power is decreased the motor will slow down under a given or constant work load. Technically there is no such thing as a multi speed motor but in actuality a multi horse power motor.
How do you Restart a Furnace After Running out of Oil?
Make sure you press reset button on oil burner longer than forty seconds because that is the manufacturers way of idiot-proofing the furnace against the homeowner.
Why does your Furnace turns on every twelve minutes?
I would investigate the thermostat first based of the info provided.
How do you clean pilot on furnace?
It's not necessary to clean it. If by any chance you have a problem and THINK you need to clean it, it's more likely the thermocouple is acting up and needs to be replaced.
