When can you separate male and female baby gerbils?

Gerbil pups should not be separated from their mother until AT LEAST six weeks old, if not eight weeks. If they are separated too soon, they will be missing out on important lessons in gerbil behavior that could lead to aggressive and unruly gerbils later in life. If the mother is eating her pups, be sure you are providing her with fresh water and plenty of food. She may be stressed, so cover half of the tank with a towel to give her some privacy. She should be fighting her pups, but she will be rough with them. Don't worry, a gerbil pup is very durable!

What should you do if your gerbil has a broken tail but it is still connected to his body?

If your hamster has wet tail it's best to buy wet tail drops from Petsmart. Here is a link that might be helpful that's a little bit pricey. http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4186111&lmdn=Pet+Type I hope this helped!

What happens when a gerbil loses their tooth?

this is normal if only one tooth is gone just check on him for weight loss and take him to the vet if it diddent grow back whithen three weeks feed him soft foods and soak his regular gerbil food for a hour

Hiya, gerbils can lose their teeth for many reasons; lack of vitamin c or calcium (they pick out bits of mix they like and leave the rest, try a mineral block), infection, trauma (i.e. knocking it) or chewing on something too hard like metal or ceramic food bowls.

If the gerbil has broken the teeth, then they will grow back in about 4 days, if they have fallen out they may or may not grow back. If they don't, just take it to the vet every 4 weeks or so to trim the others. For food, I have found with mine that liquidsing pellets and crushing the seed bits or their mix is good. Also try mixing bread with water, and give it a cucumber, apple and banana 'smoothie' mix them together and blend). I have to feed mine through a syringe because she is the most stubborn little thing and prefers to explore than eat, but other gerbils may just eat it from the cage. A bit of trial and error is needed here though to see how your gerbil prefers it's food.

Experience: I have possibly the most troublesome gerbil in the world but i love her. She has lost her teeth at least 5 times by chewing on the bars of her cage even though she has numerous cardboard tubes and wooden blocks to chew on.

:)

How do you find a missing gerbil?

Clean the room, try to lure it with something, like a treat it LOVES, gerbil babies if it has them, anything it would go to. Try the mouse traps that DON'T kill them, if you don't have them there should be some at a vets office or something that has to do with animals. That and hope it doesn't die.

How do gerbils mate?

It's really quite self explainatory. Get younger gerbils, a male and a female. Make sure they aren't from the same litter, if they are the babies could have health problems. If they are younger, introducing them to one another should be a peice of cake, if not use the slipt-cage method. They should mate, and about 21 days later, you will have a litter of gerbils. =)

Gerbil bleeding from belly?

"Call your vet" with lots of exclamation points behind it, does not really answer the original question... Of course you should call your vet (if you can and have the money). Most folks turn to the net for answers either in lieu of expensive vet procedures or because they want to try to "treat" their critter themselves because they believe that most animal treatments can be performed with relative success and minimal cost. That being said, you have to approach a given situation from a logical perspective. You need to identify from where the blood is coming, the amount of flow, and if there may have been any associated trauma (mate fights, etc) to cause it. Once you have ruled out any obvious reasons for the bleeding, and assuming the blood loss is not so much to create a critical situation, then you can move to possible treatments. A visit to the vet may, indeed, be recommended, but answering the above questions yourself before the visit will aid the vet in diagnosing the problem.

Call your vet ASAP!!!!!

Where do girbils live?

well it depends, wild gerbils usually live in warm, humid, climates such as the desert. but if their not they live in a cage. ;)

Will a gerbil or a hamsters bite you?

It depends on the hamster but probably yes i mean though ive had my hamsters for a year and they didn't bite anyone yet

What do you do if your hamster's leg is broken?

Get a tape (like a finger cast) go to shoppers to buy some. And wrap it around the wound. Then go to petsmart and ask a hamster specialist to take a look at your hamster. THEN if you want you can give petsmart your phone number, and you can leave your hamster there, in that case they can call you when your hamster can go back home. :) I'm not quite sure because my hamster has never broken her leg but you should be fine good luck :D
If the leg really is painful, take it to the vet.

It is better to take the hamster straight to the vet if any thing else.
Thanks but what if it is dragging its leg ! I think my hamsters leg cracked but always take your pet to the VET! Elizabeth
Hopefully someone will know to wrap it up in first-aid tape THEN, Take the hamster to the vet immediately
The vet said to use a q-tip and splint the leg and feed the hamster lots of protein. White meats. To leave the splint on for 3 days to a week. Just letting a broken leg hang will let it heal so it always hangs.
They can tolerate a lot of pain and it will never allow itself to set if it don't stay still next to the other bone.

if you leave your hamster alone then it will heal by itself. it will take a couple of weeks (3 or 4) if it doesnt heal then then take it to the vet.

Can you keep a male and female gerbil together and wil they mate a lot?

This is not reccomended. One time my sister looked after the school gerbils who were thought to be both female, during the summer holidays i saw one gerbil in a corner with a big blur of pink, i called my mum and we looked in the cage, only to find that she had given birth to a litter of 6 baby gerbils. This was dangerous to keep the boy gerbil in as he would eat the babies and both parents would attack each other, so we had to separate them. DO NOT TOUCH BABIES as the mother won't recognise their scent and will abandon them.

So in response to your question, it is best to keep gerbils together, 2 females is a good combination as males fight over the alpha roll, but it is a bad decision to put a male and female together.

Are hamsters able to remember things?

Oh my hamsters out now! Hamsters can remember a variety of things including... When it is time for hibernation, when it is dark, their name, You name it! They're not dumb like many animals that we all would call "dumb", like Nats, ants, turkeys, and birds!

Would it be ok to put 2 baby girl gerbils in the same cage?

Definitely!

Females are good together

Males are great together

Females & males from the same litter are fab together!

Can gerbils have chicken?

Yes, hard-boiled eggs are actually very good for pregnant or nursing mothers as it provides them with extra protein to better nurse their pups. Young gerbils could use it as well. Always monitor a gerbil closely when giving it new foods to make sure it reacts well.

Can gerbils eat watermelon?

They probably would eat it but I can't recommend it. Giving gerbils food that is mostly water is liable to give them diarrhoea and they can become dehydrated very quickly when poorly. Try Cheerios, cheese, dry toast or apple for a nice treat instead.

What is thedifference between a hamster and gerbil?

  • Differences between a hamster and rat:
  • A hamster has a short tail, a rat has a long, slender tail

  • Hamsters live 1-3 years, while rats live 2-5 years

  • Rats require more food than hamsters

  • Rats are longer in length than hamsters

A HAMSTER dose not have much of a tail and are very small, rats are fairly large and have tails and have a craving for cheese. but there is not much diffrents they are from the same chain.

How do you spoil your hamster?

The best way to take care of a hamster:

FOOD: Give them a good nutritious mix of pellets and seeds, the best seed pack brand would be fiestamax.

WATER: Give them fresh water about every 3-5 days.

CAGE: Clean it once a week, with new shavings, and arrange the cage exactly how it was before so the hamster won't be stressed.

TOYS: Give them a good variety of chew toys, like a limestone tube, or a mineral

stone, maybe blocks of wood, or apple tree sticks. You can get these all at a pet store in the hamster/small pet section.

CARE: Be nice to the hamster, to coax it into your hand, have a yogurt treat, or some seeds, and put your hand at the bottom of the cage and have your hamster sniff it. if it hops onto your hand, eating the treat, slowly lift your hand up to pet and hold the hamster.

Keep in mind that a hamster doesn't always like to be held, so hold them at the

best time you think is possible.

Why won't my gerbil drink water?

Most gerbils take time to drain down a bottle of water. They usually drink at nighttime and only a little bit. After all, gerbils are desert creatures. If they still don't drink, try changing the type of water in the dessert they get all the liquid they need from food.

Can gerbils eat cooked corn?

Hello.

I fed my 4 adult gerbils barbecued corn on the cob. They enjoyed it and there were no negative effects. But I didn't give them very much. Just a small 1 inch section of the cob. They didn't eat it all, and i removed the uneaten portion the next morning.

I buy the corn on the cobs, dried, from the pet shops. The package says you can pop them and then give it to them that way if you want.

Can you put hamsters and gerbils together in the same cage?

No. Hamsters are solitary creatures. They prefer to be the only hamster in the cage. They want their own territory for themselves. If you put two mature hamsters together, they will fight to the death.

Brambleclaw lover17703,

The only two times you should put two hamsters together in a cage is when you breed a female and a male ( but you should take them out after except for some breeds they need to stay with eachother a bit longer) and when the female is taking care of her babies. But she might eat them the first time and seperate them after 3-4 weeks. Otherwise she will eat them!

What are similarities of a hamster and a gerbil?

They're as different as humans and elephants - in fact, like humans and elephants, the only thing they really have in common is they're both mammals.

Aside from the difference in size, other differences include-

Ferrets are Mustelidae (weasel family), hamsters are Rodentia (rats, mice etc.)

Ferrets are obligate carnivores and can eat only meat, hamsters are omnivores (they eat mostly seeds, nuts and plant matter - which would make a ferret ill, possibly even killing it - but can also eat insects).

Can you feed your gerbils raspberries?

Yes, gerbils can eat a variety of fruits and vegetables! (including strawberries)

How To Tell If your Hamster Is pregnant?

He is not fat enough yet, you need to feed him more before baking. the only way to make sure if ur hamster is over weight is to check the ordinary sizes of that type of hamster. If the hamster is fat then put it on a diet

What do hamsters hate the most?

1.I strongly believe hamsters hate the smell of HALLS(the medicine). My hamster reacts to it more than a simple blow without the aroma of HALLS.This is because they have sensitive noses and the medicine is really strong.

2.Getting surprised.Pokeing the hamster while caught off guard or cleaning itself can give it a heart attack or just put them into full of scare. So it's best to put your finger infront of them and let them know your there. The reason they get really shocked is because they are prey animals.Their main reason out in the wild is to survive.so pokeing the hamster is like something grabbing it.

3.Getting squeeze real hard.I'm sure that if you got squeezed real hard in a giant hand, you will too bite the hell out of the person.

4.Baths.Don't ever bathe your hamster using water.Just find sand baths that they can use. It's better for them.Never let water rush down while their in a sink.It can make them scared of it.If water gets into their ears, bad move.

5.Neglect.Neglecting your hamster is a NO GO.If your not gonna spend time with your hamster, then you should give it to a person who will affectionate it.There's no point in having a hamster if your gonna let it sit in the corner not played with.

What will happen if a gerbil eats baking soda?

Never give gerbils brownies, if a dogs digestive system disagrees with chocolate it can hurt them and even kill them so i suppose it might be dangerous for a gerbil too. But cant you find any special chocolates buttons found in pets stores for your gerbil instead?

Can hamsters and gerbil live int the same cage?

Gerbils should never be put together with Hampsters. They are from different environments and eat different foods. Dispite the fact that most foods are for 'both hampsters and gerbils' that is wrong. They have different nutritional requirements. Hampsters are VERY territorial and will end up with one of them dead or severely injured. Do not put a gerbil and a hampster in the same cage! No matter how docile the hampster and gerbil look. yup! they can get to be pretty good buddies too.

The gerbil will love it and try to be friends, but the hamster will defend territory. The gerbil will most likely fight back and with the gerbil's long claws and teeth that never stop growing, I think the hamster will die. You guys all are stupid, Yes, Gerbils and Hamsters can live together if they're docile and nice to each other...

I have a gerbil and a Russian dwarf hamster and they have NEVER once fought, and yes u can put them together...

No! No, no, no! Anyone who has been able to do this has had extremely good luck -- and that's all it is. If it is a Syrian hamster, the gerbil will die. If a dwarf, the hamster will die.
