What are the gerbil's predators?

i think cats and snakes will eat them (i KNOW cats will)

About that, let me add. My gerbil was outside for a while (she refused to run far) and she was in a field. She looked up and saw a hawk in the air. She started shivering (poor thing!). So we picked her up and she snuggled up to me like she felt safe i my arms.

So Birds of Prey, cats, snakes, some frogs, and sometimes even dogs.

Is it possible for a gerbil to die from not eating for the past two days?

In some cases a Gerbil who's is food deprived could potentially began to eat its own hands, tail feet or other cage mates such as younger/weaker gerbils. Sometimes even there own feces. Depending on how your gerbil eats, whether frequent or a little, can determine there reaction. For example some gerbils will just began to drink in the place of food.

Why do gerbils scratch at night?

You probably have a cage set-up where there isn't anyway that they can burrow, which is what they love to do. You could either A) ignore it, B) If you have a Critter Trail cage, you could purchase a cage extension called the Super Pet Critter Trail Burrowing Maze Accessory that you connect with an accessory tube from their main cage, to it, for them to burrow through, or C) Look through cage set-ups and make up one of your own. If you have an aquarium set-up to begin with, you can simply add a heavy deal of aspen wood shavings to the bottom of the cage where they will burrow through and make their homes.

How often can gerbils reproduce?

Males- From about 7 weeks until they die (or get very ill)

Do you cut gerbils nails?

You can trim a gerbils nails with a pair of baby fingernail clippers, very very carefully looking to make sure you do not trim too much off and get the pink inside part of the nail (the quick) if you cut too short it will be painfull and bleed. Even regular adult fingernail clippers will do as long as you are careful. Also watch that you do not get the other toes in the blade or a very tramatic amputation could happen and possible death from bloodloss.

You don't have to. They will dig in something and that will trim the a little. You can hirt them if you clip their nail in the wrong spot.

How can you tell if gerbils are a girl or a boy?

The female gerbil has a distinctive genital shape (which doesn't include a sac like the male). If this doesn't help you can consider there visible nipples (they have six) on there belly BUT males have the same thing they seem to have less though. If you have both a male and female consider size difference (females are much slimmer/thin compared to a healthy male. A big clue is the yellowish color on the genital. The genital area will be very yellow/orange this is because they have there menstrual cycle. The color is much more visible compared to the male.

What should you do with gerbils that are fighting?

# Put a see through separator in their cage with one gerbil on each side # switch them twice daily so they can get used to each other's scent # Let them run around together in an open space # If one is aggressive put them in the separator again # Finally you can take out the separator and see how they react to each other # # Give them treats when they look at each other and show no aggressive behavior

What does it mean when a gerbil sqeaks?

Its quite hard to answer this without hearing the noise you are referring to as ferrets make several different squeaks, which mean different things.

Dooking is a clucking noise. It is usually accompanied by the ferret running around and jumping about as he / she is very happy or excited

Screeching / screaming is a high pitched noise and is often accompanied by a quick chattering noise. This noise means the ferret is very scared or in pain. Sometimes ferrets will screech during play because they are very excited.

Hissing sounds similar to a cats hiss. It means that the ferret is angry.

What is the difference between a gerbil and a mouse?

2 Differences Between Gerbils and MiceGerbils hop, mice run.

Gerbils have fur on their tails (and usually a tail tuft), mice don't.

A gerbil is larger than a mouse, and has fur on its tail. Mice, on the other hand have hairless tails and aren't as nice to hold as a gerbils, they tend to squirm more and could run away easier.

Can gerbils learn their names?

I can't be certain, but I don't think guinea pigs actually learn their names.

It's more likely that they learn to recognise your voice, rather than to respond to their actual name.

So, if an owner calls to its guinea pig 'Roger, Roger' or whatever, it will probably learn to recognise his or her voice - and as it knows that owner - it will respond.

It might also associate the voice tone, or perhaps even the word (but that is less likely) to something.

For instance, if the owner calls to its guinea pig 'Roger, Roger' whilst he or she is feeding it, or petting it, then the guineapig will associate the owner's cry of 'Roger' with food or petting.

So basically, either way, when this owner cries out the name 'Roger' then the guinea pig will probably respond.

Then again, maybe there is a super intelligent guinea pig out there that learns its actual name, so even if the owner says it in a really souped up voice, it still recognises it. But, sorry to ruin it for you, I highly doubt that.

Do you have to take out the male gerbil when a mother has given birth?

If you don't want any more pups then remove the male otherwise leave him in. Gerbil males make amazing fathers and help care for the pups with mom.

How do you get rid of your gerbils?

Well don't hit the rabbit ever don't do that ever!! One things rabbits do they scream when they are in pain or mortal danger. If your rabbit does something like bite you which they do not do for the most part unless irritated. When they do bite the mean it for one. What you can do as far as discipline is lay out a scream to them if they do something wrong. They might lilsten to this for the most part. Or you can tap on the floor next to them and say no. Hope this helped I'm not really an expert but i have knowledge thoughl. Thanks

What will happen if gerbils eat chocolate?

How do you stop your gerbil from tipping over his food bowl?

If the bowl is heavy, your gerbil should find it difficult to tip it over. I suggest a china bowl. If this doesn't stop him, try gluing the bowl to the floor.

We tend to just feed our gerbils (mind you we own over 40 gerbils and own many champion gerbils) on the ground. The food will get buried, but it lets the gerbils forage for there food and therefore simulates a natural habitate.

My way might be a bit expensive but it works. I have a plastic cage from pets at home and it has a special hole at the top of the cage. The food bowl slots into it and it therefore impossible for it to get tipped over.

How much does gerbil milk cost?

Gerbil food is the same as hamster food. Look for hamster/gerbil food in your local pet store. The average price for food is between 2 and 7$. It also depends on what kind of food your looking to buy. Some food that is really good for your pet is the most expensive.

What is a cute name for a gerbil?

What is the best type of bedding for gerbils?

If you ask everyone I know, they would say Carefresh. I would too! Carefresh is a popular brand, that is sold at Pet Supply Stores, and even Walmart! I would recommend the Carefresh Natural.

It is a very absorbent, odorless formula from recycled pulp and paper. The gerbils love it! Give them lots of cardboard to chew on for their shreddings to mix with the bedding, to make the ultimate blend!

NEVER use other types of bedding with either cedar or pine inside of it, which causes the gerbils to have sinus infections from excess dust, and it will eventually lead them to death!

Can you put two female and two male gerbils together?

no. when the pups are born the non pregnant gerbil will kill the pups and most likely attemp or actually kill the mother too. but if the mother dies in birth the other gerbil may adopt the pups. take it from someone who knows.

I disagree, if two females are raised together for a long period of time, they can be kept together if one has pups. I have raised gerbils a long time and usually the 2 females will raise the pups together.
