Adults might not, but babies do. I recently had a runt in my litter who was clinging to life. Trying to save its life, I warmed up some cow's milk in the microwave and used my pinkie as a nipple. It actually worked! The little thing was sucking milk from my finger. It is now doing quite well and has grown up like the others. And all the mother did was lick the milk from its face.

Gerbils have quite a strong stomach and do not get diarrhea as easily as hamsters or rats. But you have to be careful about what they eat and how much you give them. Only give them a little bit of one of these at a time if you are going to give a gerbil any.

I wouldn't try it. I had a hamster and a rat and tried to put them together. Now I only have a rat and a empty hamster cage. Rodents only like their own species. Gerbils like gerbils, rats like rats, and so on.

Me too. I had 2 hamsters. My rat got out of its cage and lets just say i had to go to 2 funerals last weekend. See, rats are scavengers and will kill and eat anything so don't try it. I had to put that rat down :( it stopped eating because it liked hamster flesh better than its food.

Yes, until they are at least six weeks old. You can even choose to leave the father in there, because he will help raise them by sitting on them and keeping them warm. About that, let me add. My gerbil was outside for a while (she refused to run far) and she was in a field. She looked up and saw a hawk in the air. She started shivering (poor thing!). So we picked her up and she snuggled up to me like she felt safe i my arms.

In some cases a Gerbil who's is food deprived could potentially began to eat its own hands, tail feet or other cage mates such as younger/weaker gerbils. Sometimes even there own feces. Depending on how your gerbil eats, whether frequent or a little, can determine there reaction. For example some gerbils will just began to drink in the place of food.

Female gerbils are called does, the males are called bucks, a baby is called a pup, and a group of them is called a clan or a horde.

You probably have a cage set-up where there isn't anyway that they can burrow, which is what they love to do. You could either A) ignore it, B) If you have a Critter Trail cage, you could purchase a cage extension called the Super Pet Critter Trail Burrowing Maze Accessory that you connect with an accessory tube from their main cage, to it, for them to burrow through, or C) Look through cage set-ups and make up one of your own. If you have an aquarium set-up to begin with, you can simply add a heavy deal of aspen wood shavings to the bottom of the cage where they will burrow through and make their homes.

You can trim a gerbils nails with a pair of baby fingernail clippers, very very carefully looking to make sure you do not trim too much off and get the pink inside part of the nail (the quick) if you cut too short it will be painfull and bleed. Even regular adult fingernail clippers will do as long as you are careful. Also watch that you do not get the other toes in the blade or a very tramatic amputation could happen and possible death from bloodloss.

You don't have to. They will dig in something and that will trim the a little. You can hirt them if you clip their nail in the wrong spot.

The female gerbil has a distinctive genital shape (which doesn't include a sac like the male). If this doesn't help you can consider there visible nipples (they have six) on there belly BUT males have the same thing they seem to have less though. If you have both a male and female consider size difference (females are much slimmer/thin compared to a healthy male. A big clue is the yellowish color on the genital. The genital area will be very yellow/orange this is because they have there menstrual cycle. The color is much more visible compared to the male.
