There's lots of websites devoted to the interesting, funny, and cool things that people find around the world in Google Maps and Google Earth ranging from crop circles to airplanes caught in flight.

The typical Google Earth user would be searching for road directions, satellite pictures, street view photos, and locations, when visiting Google earth's website.

Google Earth shows an accurate representation of the earth so Pearl Harbor can be found in the Hawaii islands in the Pacific Ocean.

Google never lets on when it will update an area, but you can subscribe to Google's 'Follow Your World' notification service to get an e-mail when they do update Kansas or whatever location you pick.

Sometimes newer imagery is available in 'Historical Imagery', which can be enabled from the View menu. In some cases the 'best' imagery isn't always the newest imagery.

There are large numbers of planes caught in flight within Google Earth imagery ranging from small prop planes to 747s.

A continuously updated collection of placemarks of all known planes in flight right now in Google Earth is available. (see below)

Note that Google is continuously updating its imagery so sometimes when looking for a plane caught in Google Earth last month or last year may not appear today so you may have to enable 'Historical Imagery' to see it again. Check for this option in View menu.

If, however, you want to see the live real-time position updates of aircraft flying then there are KML feeds to see this. Flightwise, for example, provides this capability.

A handful of web sites have cool things and special topics of things you can find in Google Earth. Google Earth Hacks is one such web site and can find crop circles with screen shots of the location and a link to jump to it in Google Earth or Google Maps.

Google Earth has been criticized for the same reason it is so popular which is having the ability to see any place on Earth in high resolution satellite, aerial, and ground-based imagery. Having such imagery and photographs in clear detail showing cars (color, make and models) and people opens up a hornet's nest of privacy issues. If a person is photographed then they can opt-out, assuming they can find themselves in a given photo often months after it was taken. There is no good way to know if you've been photographed.

People caught in comprising acts ranging from two lovers kissing in the park to others committing crimes have been captured for all to see in Google's Street View photographs. There are also national security issues for such up-to-date detailed imagery of military sites, power stations, and the like.

Fortunately Google has taken on itself the task of blurring faces and licenses plates from all Street View photographs to protect personal privacy. In other words, Google does its due diligence to prevent the individual or the vehicle from being identified, but if the filtering and blurring techniques missed something then it's up to the individual to report back to Google.

To suggest that map projection of satellite imagery on to a GLOBE greatly distorts the images around the poles is a complete lie. Distortion at the poles when projecting a globe on to a flat map is known to cause distortion as the meridians are spaced much farther apart at the equator than at the poles. To claim the same applies to a globe is crazy. How would a satellite image around a ball cause distortion in one area vs another? Simple, it would not!
