How do you make gyros?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Gyro (correct pronunciation is "year-o", not "ji-ro") is a kind of sandwich of Greek origin. The meat is traditionally ground lamb. Mixed with spices and cooked on a vertical rotisserie. As the meat cooks it is sliced off in thin strips put on Pita bread. Then the customer gets to pick what he or she wants in it, (onions, fries, ketchup, mustard, tomatoes and a sauce made of Cucumbers and yogurt with garlic and olive oil called tzatziki. You won't be getting anything like the original anywhere else but Greece, because people change it around, adding lettuce and not a lot of the original. But if you ever go to Greece you will love them.

Why did Greece win the Persian War?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

They established dominance at sea, which limited the land force which Persia could supply in such a poor country as Greece. After losing its sea supply line, Persia had to send half its army home, which made the Greeks superior on land as well as sea.

Why did Persia attack Greece during the Persian War?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The Greek colonies in Asia Minor had been incorporated within the Persian Empire. They often revolted and were given assistance by their mother-cities in mainland Greece. When Miletus revolted, Athens and Eretria provided military support, and went so far as to burn down the Persian provincial capital of Sardis. A Persian punitive expedition in response to this was defeated at Marathon and in front of Athens in 490 BCE.

Persia then decided that the only way to put a final end to this was to incorporate mainland Greece in its empire, and so establish an ethnic frontier. Many of the northern Greek cities were bribed to come to the Persian side, and Persian king Xerxes invaded southern Greece in 480 BCE.

What long term effect did the Persian war have on ancient Greece?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It established Peraia as a bogeyman, and eventually when the Persian Empire was conquered by Macedonia, Alexander the Great incorporated a veneer of Greek culture into them. Much of the Greek population entered into the service of Alexander's successors in the Greek kingdoms they established in Asia and Egypt, leaving mainland Greece underpopulated and a target in the rise of Roman Empire.
Persia agreed not to further interfere in the Greek cities in Asia Minor and the Islands.

Athens turned the Delian League which had opposed the Persian Empire into an empire of it own.

When Athens became embroiled in the Peloponnesian War against the Peloponnesian League, Persia had its revenge by helping the Peloponnesians led by Sparta to defeat Athens and strip it of its empire.

What is a silver 1978 apaxmai coin worth?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

You have a coin from Greece. The word you are looking at is not "apaxmai", but rather "ΔΡΑΧΜΑΙ". It is written in the Greek alphabet and is pronounced "drachmai".

Greece produced one coin denominated in drachmai actually made of silver in 1978, as well as three others that were silver in color (but actually made of copper-nickel).

The silver coin is a 100 Drachmai (KM#121). It is a large coin, slightly larger than the size of a US half dollar, is 65% silver and contains 0.2717 troy ounces of silver. It is a commemorative coin produced in honor of the 50th Anniversary of the Bank of Greece. Only 25,000 were produced, all in proof, and an example today is worth (according to the Standard Catalog of World Coins, about US$150.

The three copper-nickel coins produced in 1978 are the 5, 10 and 20 Drachmai coins. Each is worth about a US dollar in Uncirculated condition, and somewhat less than that with any signs of wear. All were also produced in proof, and in such condition would be worth perhaps US$8 to 10 each.

How are modern day and Greek religions different?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It depends on which "modern" religion you are talking about, and in which country.

In most of Europe and in the USA, what is prevalent is either Christianity or Islam, both of which believe in ONE God. The ancient Greeks worshiped multiple gods, which is more similar to Hindu or possibly Catholicism with all of it's saints.

What is Greece's football team?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The Greek national football team (Greek: Εθνική Ελλάδος, Ethniki Ellados) represents Greece in association football and is controlled by the Hellenic Football Federation, the governing body for football in Greece. Greece's home ground is Karaiskakis Stadium in Piraeus and their head coach is Fernando Santos. Greece is one of the most successful national teams in European football, being one of only nine national teams to have won the European Championship.

They hadn't produced any big successes in major tournaments, having participated only twice in the final tournaments of the FIFA World Cup and the UEFA European Championship, in 1994 and 1980 respectively, until UEFA Euro 2004, when they became European champions in only their second participation in the tournament. The Greeks, dismissed as rank outsiders before the tournament with bookmakers giving odds of between 80-1 to 150-1 for them to win, defeated some of the favourites in the competition including defending champions France and hosts Portugal, who Greece beat in both the opening game of the tournament and again in the final.

Since that victory Greece have qualified for the finals of all but one major competitions (European Championships and World Cups), reaching the quarter-finals of Euro 2012. Moreover, they have occupied a place in the top 20 of the FIFA World Rankings for all but four months since the 2004 triumph, and reached a high of eighth from April to June 2008, as well as in October 2011. the greek soccer teams as PAOK FC AND OLYBIAKOS FC PLAY IN THE SUPERLEAGUE
