Gum Disease

Gum diseases are infections of the bone and tissues supporting the teeth. Untreated gum diseases can become severe and may lead to tooth loss. These diseases include periodontitis and gingivitis.

486 Questions

What does gingivitis look like?

Gum infection can have several appearances.

First, it can have little or no signs or symptoms.

Often, it appears as red, swollen gums that bleed easily when you brush or floss.

Sometimes it can manifest with teeth that become longer as the gums recede.

In severe cases it can show as teeth getting loose, chronic bad breath, or a bad taste in your mouth.

A routine checkup by a dentist or dental hygienist can determine if you have infected gums.

What are the causes of weakness in Gum?

Weakness in gums can be caused by several factors, including poor oral hygiene, which leads to plaque buildup and gum disease (gingivitis or periodontitis). Nutritional deficiencies, particularly a lack of vitamin C, can also weaken gum tissue. Additionally, smoking and certain medical conditions, such as diabetes or hormonal changes, may contribute to gum weakness. Regular dental check-ups and proper oral care are essential for maintaining healthy gums.

This sore on my gum its almost like a canker sore but its on the side of my gums under the canine It is literally between my teeth and the bottom of my lip so it's not gingivitis What is it?

This is the same person who asked the question. I would just like to know what it is so I can look up what I can do with it. I get these a lot, along with canker sores on the inside of my lip, but like I said, this sore isn't on the lip at all, it's on the side of the gum. I can't even find a picture on the Internet of it, I'm not sure why since I'm sure I'm not the only person who gets these... I already have gingivitis, it's not that (it's not on the top of the gum, it's on the side). Please help!

Does bubblegum cause gingivitis?

How Do You Get Gingivitis?

Teeth and gums need to be kept clean.

While heredity and other medical factors can influence the development of Gingivitis, the major cause is poor oral hygiene. Food trapped under the gums combines with bacteria to create plaque, a "toxic stew" that irritates the gums and makes them bleed. This colorless film of sticky material containing food particles, bacteria, and saliva attaches itself to the tooth above and below the gum line encouraging Gingivitis and tooth decay.

Then plaque, the "toxic stew," hardens into tartar (calculus) in just 24 hours. Each day this "contaminated crust" grows. That's why you need to remove plaque every day no matter what. Only a dental professional can remove tartar. If you don't know too much about gingivitis, don't feel bad.

A recent poll showed that 60% of adults know little about gum disease, its symptoms, causes, treatments and consequences.

Gingivitis, the top dental problem for people over 18, is the mildest form of gum disease. This early stage of gum disease develops when bacteria build up between the gums (gingiva) and the base of the teeth they surround.

Gingivitis is usually caused by the improper cleaning of teeth.

If you've only got gingivitis, consider yourself lucky. Gingivitis acts as an early warning signal that you could be heading for serious dental health problems. In fact, Gingivitis is the baby brother of Periodontitis. (inflammation around the tooth) This more severe form of gum disease is usually connected with loss of teeth.

What Symptoms does Gingivitis present?

Here's the good news. Most symptoms are mild:

• Gums are moderately inflamed

• Gums are sensitive to touch

• Gums bleed easily while brushing, flossing, or probing

• Gums might itch

• Bad breath might be present

Now, the bad news. Most symptoms are mild.

Because Gingivitis symptoms are easy to ignore people often do just that. Many gingivitis patients don't even know they have Gingivitis

Why Should You Worry About Gingivitis?

Untreated, Gingivitis leads to periodontitis. Gingivitis can mean minor blood loss; Periodontitis can mean major tooth loss.

Evidence is mounting of potential links between Gingivitis and more serious health concerns. Healthy immune systems normally fight off the bacteria developing in the mouth. When this protection is compromised in any way, the added bacteria in the bloodstream appear to increase the risk of stroke or heart disease.

Remember, it's not what Gingivitis is but what it leads to - irreversible Periodontitis and likely tooth loss.

How Do You Find Out if You Have Gingivitis?

Visit your dentist twice a year. During the exam, your gums will be assessed for Gingivitis - bleeding, swelling, and firmness. In addition, your dental professional will check plaque and tartar build-up above and below the gum line.

What Gingivitis Treatments Are Available?

Early Gingivitis is reversible with professional treatment and regular oral care at home. The dentist or hygienist will probably help reduce the current buildup of tartar by scaling the teeth. Scaling removes tartar and plaque from the surface of the infected teeth.

Reversing Gingivitis is all about daily plaque control - essentially sound oral hygiene. That means, in most cases, stopping the plaque in your mouth is really in your own hands. Brush every day.

Dental professionals recommend oral irrigation as a great way to really clean teeth and gums.

Brushing and flossing will not get under the gums where the bacteria have set up housekeeping.

Oral irrigators get what tooth brushes and floss don't, so plaque and tartar never come back.

Oral irrigators flood the mouth with a jet of water under pressure to flush offending food particles and bacteria from the mouth.

Oral irrigators can now be found that attach to your showerhead or you bathroom sink faucet and are very easy to use.

You got your wisdom teeth taken out yesterday and your cheeks feel like they r attached to your gums r they swollen or is it really possible that they are attaching to the gums where the teeth were?

The most likely cause of this feeling is just what you have said: swelling. If you didn't ice your cheeks and jaw around the site of the extraction, swelling will occur for a day or so. Another less likely possibility is that during the extraction a nerve was hit, which could result in losing some feeling in the area, making it seem feel like your gums and cheeks are together. If the feeling doesn't go away after another day or two, talk to your dentist/oral surgeon about it.

I have swelling right behind your back left molar when you push on it yellowish puss comes out and my jaw is sore what is this?

More than likely any pus that comes out of your gum is related to an infection. If left untreated, this infection can fester and eventually undermine the strength of the bone holding the tooth in your jaw. My advice would be to see a dentist as soon as possible for an evaluation of the problem.

Do you have an alternative to periostat tablet 20mg Doxycycline Hyclate?

Periostat is now available in generic formula, doxycycline hyclate 20mg. The dosage is very important. Periostat is indicated as an adjunct treatment of gum disease. It supresses certain enzymes produced by the body that destroy connective tissue, an important component of gum tissue. If you exceed the recommended dosage of 20mg twice a day, you run the risk of complications associated with long-term antibiotic usage.

At this time, 2009, there is no other systemic medication indicated for the supression of enzymes associated with gum disease.
